Whenever it came to facing the might of Fayetteville-Manlius, the Liverpool girls tennis team had a reason to carry modest expectations, since most of the time it wouldn’t get close to earning a point against the Hornets.
That changed a bit in last Monday’s match, with the Warriors twice breaking through in doubles, the first points the Hornets allowed all season, a bit of a moral victory even though F-M still won all of the singles matches and prevailed 5-2.
Gabby Underwood paired with Julia Schewe, and they routed the Hornets’ Alexis Ahn and Emma Zogg 7-5, 6-1. Olivia Magnarelli and Crystal Morgans made quite a comeback in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Trisha Adavikolanu and Angela Iskander.
In the other doubles matches, Megan Polhamus and Kala Wallingford lost to Maya McKenzie and Camilla Wojtasiewicz 6-2, 6-0, with Sheridan Bryerton and Lea Prusinowski taking a 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Natalie Hugo and Brooke Tester.
When Underwood took a turn in singles, she lost, 6-4, 6-0, to Phoebe Wang, with Diana Kozenyatko falling to Anna Manta 6-2, 6-2 and Kelly Geiwitz running into Samhitha Adavikolanu and having a 6-3, 6-0 loss.
Liverpool had another chance to knock off a quality opponent when it faced Baldwinsville 24 hours later, but could not quite pull it off, taking a 4-3 defeat to the Bees.
Geiwitz and Gabby Underwood both lost in singles, but Angelica Underwood made quite a comeback after a rough start to defeat Paige Tromblee 1-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Moving to doubles, Kozenyatko and Schewe paired up to beat Audrey Benton and Hannah Guild 6-4, 6-2, while Magnarelli and Morgans held off Reagan Doan and Ella Tromblee 6-4, 6-4. The teams of Polhamus-Wallingford and Prusinowski-Sarah Watkins each lost in two sets.
A 5-2 defeat to West Genesee followed on Thursday afternoon, with Geiwitz and Gabby Underwood pairing up to beat Alyssa Congel and Margaret Mello 6-3, 6-0, while Magnarelli and Morgans handled Katie Anson and Sophia Lowry 6-3, 6-2.
But the Wildcats won every singles match, including a close battle that went to a third-set tie-breaker, Angelica Underwood falling to WG’s Angelina Llanos 4-6, 6-3, 7-6.
At least Liverpool gained points against F-M – something that Cicero-North Syracuse could not do when it took it shot at the Hornets last Tuesday and fell to the Hornets 7-0.
Cambrie Hibbard, in second singles, had an early lead on Iskander, but could not hold it in a 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 defeat. Krista Feeney did pick off a couple of games from Samhitha Adivikolanu in a 6-2, 6-2 loss.
But C-NS did get into the win column Thursday, blanking Syracuse East 7-0. Feeney, Hibbard and Karly Williams each won singles matches, with the doubles teams of Sara Cartier-Olivia Cerio, Eve Campitello-Brooke Ten Brink, Angel Languaphay-Lauren Misco and Emily Pilz-Natalie Romano each winning in two sets.
