When wet field conditions persisted into early last week, the Fayetteville-Manlius softball team did a bit of improvisation.
The Hornets’ home game against powerhouse Cicero-North Syracuse last Monday was moved over to F-M’s Turf Stadium, which was turned into a diamond with bases, temporary fences and special ground rules.
Regardless of where the game was held, though, the Hornets would struggle to contain the Northstars, who only needed five innings to finish off a 16-0 victory, peaking when it netted eight runs in the top of the second inning.
F-M only got one hit off C-NS pitcher Ariana Corasaniti, when Paige Murphy singled. For the Northstars, Brandi Feeney’s pair of triples led to three RBIs, with Alayna Harbaugh also driving in three runs as Brooke Nicolaos recorded four RBIs.
Weather interrupted F-M’s schedule until Saturday, when it tried for a regular-season sweep of Liverpool, only to see its defense make 11 errors in a 15-8 defeat to the Warriors.
Still finishing with 10 hits, the Hornets saw Lily Fish hit a home run, one of her three hits on the day. Gracie Bishop drove in two runs, with Sophie Woodridge adding an RBI and Maya McKenzie scoring twice. Sophia D’Arcangelis (four-for-four, three runs scored) and Helen Hash (three hits, four runs scored) led Liverpool.
Christian Brothers Academy went to Chittenango last Monday and, in the fourth inning, broke out of a 3-3 tie with a pair of runs, adding nine more runs in the next two innings to pull away and beat the Bears 14-3.
Juila DelPino and Victoria Hall led the charge, each of them going three-for-four as DelPino got four RBIs and Hall three RBIs. Makenzie Witz had two hits as she and Julia Griffith each drove in two runs. Abby Benware scored three times as she and Emily Hall each had one RBI.
In Thursday’s game at Phoenix, CBA again won big, blasting the Firebirds 15-0 in a five-inning mercy-rule game where a seven-run first inning helped set the tone.
Accumulating 16 hits, the Brothers saw Emily Hall hit a home run as she got three hits, as did Benware and Kaitlyn Bushnell. DelPino and Maya Geiss joined Bushnell, Emily Hall and Victoria Hall in getting two RBIs apiece as Witz also drove in a run.
Bishop Grimes started last week with a 19-2 defeat to Tully, and then lost 16-0 to Tully a couple of days later, only putting up runs on Thursday during a 12-6 defeat to LaFayette.
Against the Lancers, the Cobras led 5-3 through three innings, only to surrender three runs to LaFayette in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. Sarah Falgiatano still had two hits and two RBIs, while Becca Vinciquerra and Brianna Bowles both scored twice.
