In their own manners, girls golf teams at Fayetteville-Manlius and Christian Brothers Academy managed to stay undefeated despite the strong challenges from league foes.
F-M, who survived a close call with Liverpool May 1, only prevailing by two shots (176-178), would meet them again a week later at Liverpool Country Club, and fought through wind, rain and wet conditions to beat the Warriors a second time.
The 190-197 decision mirrored the first match in that Liverpool’s Mia and Natalya Avotins would set the individual pace, Mia posting a 41 for nine holes and Natalya posting a 44.
But the next six best rounds came from F-M, starting with Bailey Wallace’s 45. Justine Burness had a 47, with Lucy Fowler and Kira Graves both posting 49. Ashley Carter had a 50 and Elly Hulslander a 51 in front of the third-best Liverpool round of 55 from Hanna Dombroski.
Before this, F-M won twice, first by handling Cicero-North Syracuse’s Blue team 175-204 last Monday at Green Lakes.
Burness won the individual race with a 39, with Wallace (42) and Hulslander (46) completing a top-three sweep ahead of the Northstars’ Amy Krohl, who had a 47. Fowler had a 48, with Carter (50) and Alexandra Egnaczyk (52) close behind.
Then F-M rolled past West Genesee 168-224 on Wednesday, another tremendous group effort where Burness and Wallace both shot 39, while Fowler had a 44. Hulslander and Graves both finished at 46 and Carter added a 48.
When CBA, 7-0 going into last Monday’s match with Marcellus at Tuscarora, got pushed hard by the Mustangs, the Brothers relied on its depth to earn its eighth straight win by a two-stroke margin, 230-232.
The 56s shot by Elizabeth Lucas and Isabella Meade trailed the 52 by Marcellus’ Grace Alexander. Consistent rounds by Megan Mitchell (59), Sophia Matthews (60), Bronte Stahl (61) and Kendall Koloski (62) gave CBA work to do.
Yet the Brothers pulled it out because Annie Kilmartin and Hanna Kang both shot 59, with Aubrey Mills adding a 63 and Makenna Schultz contributing a 65.
Jamesville-DeWitt, still setting the pace in the SCAC Empire division, went head-to-head with Auburn last Monday at Butternut Creek and defeated the Maroons 170-186.
As she has done all season, Lena Jones led the Red Rams, her 39 three shots ahead of the 42 from Sophia Ferris. Sophie Lesch shot a 42 of her Auburn, but Eden Shiomos had a 44 and Kelli Palumbo a 45 to help J-D pull away.
Bishop Grimes lost, 251-287, to Skaneateles last Monday at Skaneateles Country Club, but turned it around a day later at Camillus Country Club, the Cobras defeating Westhill 249-254.
The difference came at the top, where Brina Deppoliti, shooting a 51 for Grimes, was six strokes ahead of the Warriors’ Kate Vaughan. Abby Fletcher added a 62.
Grimes made it back-to-back wins on Thursday by taking out Chittenango 237-250. At Erie Village, Deppoliti again led the way, her 53 eight shots ahead of the Bears’ duo of Carolyn Myka and Anastasia Joynt.
In boys golf, the big match of the week on Friday pitted Manlius-Pebble Hill against undefeated Marcellus at Sunset Ridge on a windy Friday afternoon.
Here, the Trojans took its first loss of the season, a 214-230 decision where Grant Lewis shot the low individual round of 36, edging out Johnny Gruninger’s total of 37.
Marcellus also got a 37, from David Bosak, plus five other rounds of 47 or lower ahead of the Trojans’ third-lowest total from Tommy Wildhack, who had a 49. Brendan O’Malley had a 53 and Max Fung added a 55.
Before that, MPH went through the rain last Tuesday to beat Jordan-Elbridge 228-259. Gruninger finished with a 34, edging out Lewis (35) as they both were well clear of the 46 shot by the Eagles’ Jeremy Melfi
Bishop Grimes met Pulaski last Monday and lost, 229-240, to the Blue Devils. Anthony Falgiatano shot a 37 for the Cobras, just behind the 35 from Pulaski’s Chris Olson.
