Each of the Cazenovia and Chittenango girls golf teams battled through a host of league matches last week with an eye toward this Wednesday’s Onondaga High School League tournament at Woodcrest.
Sophie Clancy led all individuals when the Lakers faced Marcellus last Tuesday afternoon at Cazenovia Country Club, shooting a 46 for nine holes, two ahead of the Mustangs’ Kendall Koloski.
But Cazenovia still lost, 210-224, to Marcellus, who had five of the seven lowest scores, with only Clancy and Courtney Holt breaking up that effort as Holt tied for fourth with a 54.
Otherwise for the Lakers, Josie Avery, Kim Marris, Emma Tyler and Emily Forrett each shot the same total of 62, while Cady Webb finished with a 69.
A day later, Cazenovia got back to the .500 mark (4-4) by defeating its Lakers namesakes from Skaneateles by two strokes, 274-276.
Clancy’s 51 matched that of Sknaeateles’ Lili Winkelman, while Holt had a 52. With four Skaneateles scores of 58 or lower, Cazenovia needed a 56 from Marris and a 57 from Tyler, plus a 58 from Avery to stay out in front.
In a rematch with Marcellus Thursday afternoon at Tuscarora, Cazenovia dropped a 252-272 decision. Clancy’s 52 was two shots ahead of the Mustangs’ Grace Alexander, while Holt had a 68 and Forrett shot 74. Tyler finished with a 78.
Weather cleared up enough on Friday for Cazenovia to face Westhill, and the Lakers prevailed 209-218, Clancy’s 41 bettering the field by 10 shots as Avery was second with a 51 ahead of the Warriors’ Julianne Bleskoski, who shot 52. Holt had a 57 and Marris posted a 60.
Chittenango played last Monday against Westhill, falling 255-276 to the Warriors. Anastasia Joynt shot a 62 at Camillus Country Club and Bailey Ford managed a 64, but two Warriors beat those marks as Kate Vaughan had a 50 and Charlotte Roth added a 60.
In Thursday’s 237-250 defeat to Bishop Grimes at the Links at Erie Village, Chittenango had Joynt shoot another 62, which Carolyn Myka matched, but the Cobras’ Brina Deppoliti had a 54 to top all individuals.
