It was a week in track and field that included two local large-scale events on Friday – the East Syracuse Minoa Invitational for girls and the Christian Brothers Academy Coed Invitational at Alibrandi Stadium.
ESM’s meet drew more than 20 teams, including most of the large-school powers, as Cicero-North Syracuse won the team title with 125 points and Liverpool (76 points) was second.
Not getting lost amid this quality field, the host Spartans had 39 points to finish sixth, which included Maria Markert tying Westhill’s Ashley Heffernan and Marcellus’ Julianna Szczech for first in the pole vault, each of them clearing 9 feet.
ESM’s 4×100 relay team of King, Lailani Carrion, Kayleigh Maloof and Sophie Hartz, fresh from running in the Penn Relays a week earlier, was second in 51.02 seconds, behind only the 50.78 from Liverpool. Hartz also was sixth in the 100-meter dash.
Jessica Stevens was fourth in the pentathlon with 1,922 points, including the top shot put toss of 25’6”, with Rhiannon Butchko and Jennah Ferrari both clearing 4’8” in the high jump to share fourth place.
Rachael Ladd went 8:25.10 in the 2,000-meter steeplechase to finish fourth. Sara Bourdon was fifth in both the shot put (30’4 ½”) and discus, where she tossed it 87’2”. Julia Perrotta earned a fifth-place triple jump of 32’7”.
Jamesville-DeWitt got 11 points in this meet, most of them from Laeticcia Bazile winning the long jump by clearing 5 feet with fewer misses than C-NS’s Lilly Capria. The Red Rams were sixth in the 4×100 in 54.09 seconds as Bishop Grimes had Sophia Hatton finish third in the 1,500-meter run in 5:06.50 and Abby Wilkinson finish fifth in the pentathlon.
As this went on, CBA hosted its Brother Basilian meet, its girls team finishing third with 53.5 points behind Vernon-Verona-Sherrill and Canastota as the boys finished 10th in the 17-team field.
CBA’s Skye Ryan was victorious in the girls discus, throwing it 87’4” as no one else topped the 74-foot mark. In the shot put, Ryan’s toss of 31’11 ½” was enough to complete a throwing sweep.
Cory Knox needed exactly 17 seconds to win the 100 hurdles by more than half a second over the field., while Olivia Morganti, running 3,000 meters in 10:24.33, was second to South Lewis star Hannah Ielfield (10:02.72).
Lea Kyle went 1:14.46 in the 400 hurdles, second to Skaneateles’ Graeson Landsberg (1:12.07). Beatrice Gurgol was fifth in the long jump, with Bri Pucci sixth in the 800-meter run.
For the CBA boys, Zach Medicis recorded a third-place mile of 4:39.59, with Joel Gaffney fifth in 4:45.92. Riley Nash got fourth place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:22.5, with Philip Tam throwing the discus 95’3” for fourth place. Caleb Krueger was fifth in the 800 in 2:08.29, with the Brothers’ best relay finish a fourth in the 4×100 in 48.36 seconds
As this went on, J-D had its boys track team earn 30 points for ninth place at the New Hartford Invitational. Fidel Martinez, Haberle Conlon, Nick Mannion and Mike Potamianos were second (3:33.24), just behind Baldwinsville (3:32.86), in the 4×400.
James Richer had a third-place discus throw of 130’5” and was fifth (43’10 ¼”) in the shot put. The Rams were third in the distance medley relay in 11:35.79, fourth in the 4×100 (45.56 seconds) and sixth in the 4×800 and 1,600 sprint medley. Nick Dekaney got sixth place in the 110 hurdles, with Juan Smith sixth in the 200.
Earlier in the week, the ESM girls hosted a specialty qualifying invitational where the girls Spartans’ 4×100 relay team prevailed in 52.72 seconds.
Bourdon won the discus with a throw of 91’1” and was second (30’11”) in the shot put. Butchko cleared 5 feet in the high jump, with Julia Perrotta second in the triple jump by going 31’7”.
The ESM boys had Ermin Alemic finish first in the long jump (19’11) and triple jump (40’9”), with Elijah Buck throwing the shot put 43’2 ¾” and the discus 120’1” to win both events.
Myles Riggins (15.65 seconds) and Michael Parks (16.19) went 1-2 in the 110 hurdles, with Nick Berg winning the 800 in 2:02.93 as Josh Cain finished third and Parks was second in the high jump. Parks, Riggins, Alemic and Rocky El claimed the 4×100 relay in 46.78 seconds as Conner Hillman won the 400 hurdles in 1:03.57.
Later, in the 3,000-meter boys steeplechase that was part of the girls ESM Invitational, Michael Sanders was fifth for the Spartans in 11:25.7 and Marcus Evans sixth, with J-D’s Ahviere Reese fourth in 11:14.5.
