In its first match of May, the Christian Brothers Academy boys tennis team suffered its first setback of 2019, absorbing a 3-2 defeat to the Homer Trojans last Thursday afternoon.
Before this, CBA topped Onondaga 4-1 last Monday afternoon in single-set matches that went to eight games to beat the rain.
Ben and Dean Vlassis paired in doubles to top Michaela Germain and Ty Zych 8-0, with Hunter Burton and Max Lewis earning an 8-0 shutout of Sophia Featherstone and Nate Hay.
In singles, Matt Potenza lost, 8-0, to the Tigers’ Jon Massaro, but Shivam Nanavati beat Jake Massaro by that same 8-0 margin as Michael Hill won, 8-2, over Paul Okhman.
It proved closer on Wednesday, CBA getting past LaFayette 3-2 as the Vlassis brothers, along with Burton and Lewis, each won doubles matches without dropping a game.
Up in singles, Oguntola lost, 6-3, 6-3, to Kaleigh Danaher, with Potenza starting fine but falling to Hunter Martorella 0-6, 6-2, 6-2, but Nanavati got the clinching point by handling Dante Friedman 6-0, 6-1.
Rain shortened the match last Monday between Manlius-Pebble Hill and Marcellus, but the Trojans got the clinching points it needed to defeat the Mustangs 3-1.
Claiming both doubles points, MPH had J.J. Braverman and Harry Xu beat Nick Hahn and Tyler Szalach 6-0, 6-0, with Casey Beach and Alex Fung getting a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dan Fox and Joe Perleoni. Dan Braverman lost in singles 6-4, 6-4, to Andrew Kammer, but Charlie Mann handled Tyler Guerrina 6-2, 6-1.
But then MPH lost 5-0 to Mexico a day later. In the closes matches, Dan Braverman fell 6-4, 7-5 to Joe Ocker, while in doubles Xu and J.J. Braverman fell to Jacob Hill and Connor Shaffer 7-5, 6-3.
Turning that around, MPH blanked Onondaga by that same 5-0 margin on Thursday, with J.J. Braverman going to singles and rallying past Jon Massaro 6-7, 6-3, 10-3. Mann and Dan Braverman earned the other singles points, and the Trojans swept doubles, too.
Jamesville-DeWitt returned to action last Tuesday and routed Auburn 7-0, with Peter Hatton, Mark Bratslavsky and Will Guisbond dropping just two games in six sets of singles play.
In the closest of the four doubles matches, the Red Rams’ duo of William Parratt and Wes Sharlow got a 7-5, 6-4 win over James Mock and Troy Wagner. Ben Oppedisano and Simon Zhou got past Gabriel Volo and Tim Walsh 6-4, 6-3.
J-D won again on Wednesday, topping Cortland 6-1 as Mark Bratslavsky survived a 7-5, 7-6 singles battle with Nick Djafari, while Hatton and Guisbond also prevailed in singles.
The Purple Tigers won a doubles point when Parratt and Sharlow lost, 6-1, 6-3, to Josh Henry and Aaron Hughes, but the teams of Essex Glowaki-Dhruv Nanavati and Mike Bratslavsky-Aniket Maini both won in two sets, with Oppedisano and Aiden Usher pairing up to beat Colter Gohs and Yefim Kalytyuk 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.
Bishop Grimes did not get a point in last Monday’s 5-0 defeat to Mexico, and in fact the Tigers won all five matches in straight sets. Zed Weigand had the closest match in singles, a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Harley Wakeman. A 5-0 defeat to Westhill followed.
Many other matches were rained out during the week, with Fayetteville-Manlius particularly affected as it will have to crowd most of its regular-season contests into the next two weeks.
