Now each of the area’s high school girls lacrosse teams found themselves part of various state rankings – except for the one that earned the state Class A championship a season ago.
Jamesville-DeWitt was no. 7 in last week’s state Class C rankings, but were now joined by East Syracuse Minoa in the no. 18 spot as both sides found success in the last full week of April.
And now they went head-to-head on Thursday night at ESM Stadium, but again what it showed was that the Red Rams were several steps ahead of the Spartans, prevailing by a score of 16-7.
Any questions about the outcome were answered early. Mostly led by Ana Dieroff and Lily Loewenguth, J-D kept on adding to its margin until it led 13-2 at halftime.
For the night, Dieroff had five goals and two assists, with Loewenguth scoring four times. Lindsay MacLachlan got two goals and two assists as Kailey McKenna also scored twice. Riley LaTray and Emily Bobrek both had a goal and two assists and Gabby Modesti converted, too.
ESM did play better in the second half, seeing Kelly Thomas, Julianna Barton and Emma Biel each finish with two goals. Sophia Orlando had one goal and one assist
Before this, J-D hosted Auburn last Tuesday night and required a second-half comeback to turn away the challenge of the state Class B no. 12-ranked Maroons and prevail 10-8.
Both teams were 7-1, Auburn’s lone blemish coming when the Rams beat them 14-10 at Holland Stadium on March 29. For a long while, it looked like the Maroons would get even.
With Gabby McGinn earning four assists, Auburn steadily controlled the first half and built a 7-3 margin, McGinn passing it to her teammates as Natalie Calandria-Ryan, Gracie Giannettino and Jillian Alberici had two goals apiece.
But J-D used a player advantage early in the second half to jumpstart a 4-0 run that tied it, 7-7, and while its defense limited Auburn to one goal the rest of the way, the Rams seized the lead and, after Dieroff scored with 5:40 left, blanked the Maroons the rest of the way.
The clinching goal was Dieroff’s fourth of the night, MacLachlan adding three assists as she also found the net twice. McKenna had one goal and one assist, with Modesti, Lily Loewenguth and Chloe Loewenguth netting their own goals.
Christian Brothers Academy had a few days to stew after a lopsided April 16 defeat to state Class D no. 1-ranked Skaneateles, and once it resumed at the end of that week, the Brothers jumped all over visiting Liverpool in the course of a 16-8 victory.
It was 12-2 by halftime, CBA’s attack rounding back into form as five different players would earn multiple goals, led by Bella Roberson, who scored four times.
Tatumn Kohlbrenner and Gracie Britton both had three-goal hat tricks, with Anna Ziemba and Gia Anthony each earning two goals and one assist. Riley Taylor had one goal and one assist, with Amanda Winn also finding the net.
Now 4-2, CBA took on Tully last Tuesday afternoon and cranked up its offense again, pulling away to beat the Black Knights 21-9.
A big surge late in the first half stretched the Brothers’ margin to 15-5, and it kept going despite the running clock as Britton scored six times, adding two assists, while Roberson had five goals and one assist.
Taylor and Ziemba picked up their own three-goal hat tricks, Taylor adding an assist. Glowaki had two goals and two assists, with Anthony also finding the net twice. Kohlbrenner had three assists, with Winn and Abby Hulslander getting two assists apiece.
Back home on Thursday, CBA handled Cazenovia 15-3, with Britton (three goals, four assists) and Ziemba (two goals, three assists) leading the way as Roberson and Taylor also had three-goal hat tricks. Anthony scored twice, adding an assist, with Kohlbrenner getting a goal and two assists as Glowaki also scored.
ESM romped past Syracuse 17-2 last Tuesday night, earning a first-half shutout as it amassed a 9-0 advantage, Rileigh White earning three assists to go with her three-goal hat trick.
Katherine Andrus also scored three times, adding an assist as Barton netted four goals. Thomas scored twice, with Biel and Orlando each adding a goal and two assists.
