On the brink of a particularly satisfying win in the program’s annals, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls lacrosse team was turned back.
The Red Rams late in regulation of last Saturday’s battle with West Genesee, but gave up that advantage and then, in overtime, suffered an 11-10 defeat to the Wildcats.
What made the defeat so frustrating on J-D’s part was the way it fought back several times in this game, especially after a slow start.
WG built a 3-0 advantage before the Rams got on the board, and when it pulled back within one, 4-3, Mackenzie Winn’s fourth goal allowed the Wildcats to take a 5-3 edge to the break.
It got worse early in the second half, the Rams’ deficit growing to 9-4, but J-D preserved and, led by Lindsay MacLachlan and Ana Dieroff, it made its way back.
The Rams stunned WG with six unanswered goals to grab a 10-9 lead with little more than three minutes to play, but the comeback took a toll and, fighting back, the Wildcats pulled back even as Emily Stratton converted with 1:25 left.
Regulation ended 10-10, but in the overtime period J-D could not get to the ball, and the Wildcats got it back to Stratton who, off a feed from Sam Detor, put it past Skyler Constantino for the game-winner.
MacLachlan finished with four goals and one assist, while Dieroff scored three times. Single goals went to Riley LaTray, Lily Loewenguth and Emily Bobrek as Constantino made 13 saves. Stratton’s game-winner matched her with Winn for four goals apiece.
Just 24 hours after East Syracuse Minoa’s game with J-D got snowed out, it warmed up and cleared out for the Spartans to visit Homer, where it had little trouble putting away the Trojans 18-1.
Rileigh White amassed six goals and Katherine Andrus scored four times, White adding an assist. Emma Biel earned three goals, with Julianna Barton converting twice. Kelly Thomas, Julia Caruana and Hailey Cwikla had one goal apiece.
Then ESM hosted Cortland on Thursday night and doubled up the Purple Tigers, prevailing 18-9 as it piled up 13 goals during the first half while building most of its winning margin.
Katherine Andrus stepped up with three goals and three assists. Biel scored four times, adding an assist as Thomas and Sophia Orlando also had three-goal hat tricks. Cwikla added two goals, with White, Barton and Marissa Drogo getting single goals.
Before it faced West Genesee, J-D put away Syracuse 15-2 on Thursday afternoon.
Lily Loewenguth, with four goals, and Ana Dieroff, with three goals, led the Red Rams. Gabby Modesti and Riley LaTray each scored twice, Modesti adding two assists as Everly Kessler got a goal and three assists. Emily Bobrek, Chloe Loewenguth and Kailey McKenna also found the net.
