Emerging from the tangled web of early-season non-league matches and tournaments, area high school boys soccer teams now plunged into league play.
Marcellus, who was no. 8 in the first state Class B rankings of the fall, and celebrated by bashing Phoenix 12-1 last Tuesday night, the effort including three-goal hat tricks by David Bosak and Sean Libera.
Helping them out, Ryan Moses, Dakota Baker and Tristan Jarvi each got one goal and one assist, with Josh Boos scoring twice. Brett Beal added a goal as Lukas Stasyuk had two assists, while Bryce Kelly and Andrew Fragnito had one assist apiece.
It wasn’t as lopsided on Thursday, but Marcellus beat Chittenango 3-1 and Bosak had much to do with it, earning one goal and assisting on the other two, by Beal and Ryan Lundgren. Jarvi assisted on Bosak’s tally.
As for Westhill, it took its second road defeat of the season last Wednesday at Alibrandi Stadium, where it could not hold an early lead against Christian Brothers Academy as the Brothers prevailed 2-1.
Even after Braden Krzykowski scored off a rebound of a David McPeak shot less than seven minutes into the game, the Warriors could not follow it up, often finding itself in a defensive mode for the rest of the first half.
That worked until early in the second half, when Hunter Burton jumped on a rebound of Ayo Oguntola’s shot and tied it, 1-1 and CBA had most of the good chances afterward, too.
With 11:32 left in regulation, Ben Vlassis unleashed a long throw-in that dropped in front of the net and, before Liam Robb could control it, Jack Harrigan slid the shot past him.
Vlassis later left with a second yellow card, but the Brothers did not go a player down in the final minutes, and the Warriors were still stymied as the clock ran out.
West Genesee was 2-0 in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division after back-to-back 3-2 overtime wins over Fayetteville-Manlius and Henninger.
However, unbeaten, state Class AA no. 4-ranked Baldwinsville stopped the Wildcats 2-0 last Monday night at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, despite a strong effort from the visitors.
It stayed 0-0 throughout the first half, WG under constant assault and yet holding on, Zach Bolton continuing his fine work in goal as he would finish the night with 20 saves.
Only in the 49th minute did B’ville break through with Josh Price’s goal, assisted by Tyler Johnson. And it wasn’t until Ben Rabe converted with 10:40 to play could the Bees pull clear.
Back home on Thursday night, WG took a 1-0 defeat to Cicero-North Syracuse, again with a scoreless first half and a late tally making the difference as Bryant Perdomo’s goal decided it. None of the Wildcats’ seven shots got past Northstars goalie Ethan Doerschuk.
Jordan-Elbridge could not get on the board last Tuesday in a 4-0 defeat to Chittenango, mostly thwarted by Sean Larsson, who gave the Bears two goals and one assist. Artie Paul and Anthony Roberts had the other tallies as Eagles goalie Keegan Delap made 11 saves.
Two days later, the Eagles avoided a shutout at Skaneateles as Zach Fabreze scored off Mike Meyer’s feed in the second half. But J-E lost 7-1 to the Lakers, who scored five times in the first half as Thomas Reed (two goals, two assists) and Owen Cheney (three assists) led them.
After an up-and-down start, Bishop Ludden got on track last Wednesday, defeating Cato-Meridian 3-1 as Liam Casey earned two of the Gaelic Knights’ three goals. Connor Catalano had the other as Charles Colella, Michael Gaughan and Axel Rivera earned assists.
However, Ludden lost, 4-2, to crosstown private-school rival Bishop Grimes on Saturday. Catalano and Antonio Scutari earned goals, with Liam Casey and Michael Gaughan adding assists, but the Cobras got away behind two goals from Byam Mugushu, with Mike DiBlasi and Connor Alexander also finding the net.
