With its strong start, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys golf team could reach the top of the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division standings if it prevailed against Baldwinsville in an Aug. 31 showdown.
However, the Hornets got upended, 195-198, by the Bees, largely because it had two players shoot nine-hole scores of 34, Max Dec and Vic Ianno, while F-M only had one 34, from Adam Butch.
That, along with a 37 from Matt Shipman, gave the Bees a lead it would not relinquish as Anthony Petragnani got a 42 and Aidan Farmer had a 43 for the Bees. Mike Millimaci shot 38 for F-M ahead Mike Millimaci (38), Sean Arthur (41), Matt LaCombe (42) and Andrew Heyman (43).
Just before meeting B’ville, F-M handled Liverpool 187-206 on Aug. 30 at Woodcrest, displaying depth that went beyond the 36 that Butch shot to claim individual honors.
Heyman’s 37 matched that of the Warriors’ Spencer Baum, and the Hornets got clear thanks to three rounds of 38 from Arthur, Millimaci and Velton Perry, each of them ahead of the 40 from Liverpool’s Sam Sgroi.
Right after the loss to B’ville, F-M got rolling again on Thursday with a 191-224 win over Syracuse at Sunset Ridge. Perry won a close individual race by shooting 37 as Butch and Millimaci both posted 38, with Heyman and Arthur each finishing at 39.
Then, in Friday’s 190-207 win over Cicero-North Syracuse’s Green team at Northern Pines, Butch, Arthur and Miillimaci each shot 37 and Perry had a 38 ahead of the 39s by the Northstars’ Steve Filapello and Sam Thompson. Heyman contributed a 41.
At 4-0 going into last week, Christian Brothers Academy stayed that way in sweltering heat last Wednesday as it held off Homer 234-242 at Cortland Country Club.
Though the Trojans’ Mitch Riter had a 41 to lead all individuals, the Brothers claimed the next three spots, starting with Joe Nicholson shooting 41.
Dan Angelo had a 45, while Chris Bushnell shot 47. Mike Santoro’s 48 tied him with the Trojans’ Andrew Hage for fifth place as Mike Schaefer clinched a CBA win, shooting 49.
Looking for six in a row, the Brothers faced Chittenango Friday at Rogues Roost and won big, 203-249, posting the five lowest rounds of the afternoon.
Santoro led the way, his par score of 36 well clear of Nicholson’s 39. Then Angelo posted a 42 as Ryan McLaughlin and Jack Little each shot 43, ahead of the Bears’ low total of 46 from Tyrus Kelly.
Jamesville-DeWitt continued its quick start on Aug. 31 by handling Oswego 197-225 at Drumlins. Punn Chittaralert shot a 35 to hold off Red Rams teammate Peter Hatton (36) in the individual race as Jake Ellithorpe shot 41, edging the Buccaneers’ Ryan Bartlett (42) for third place.
Then J-D rolled past Fulton 200-256 last Tuesday afternoon at Battle Island, led this time by Hatton, who shot a 34 as Chittaralert contributed a 37. Tanner Burns stepped up, shooting 39.
East Syracuse Minoa Blue also faced Fulton (though did not go head-to-head with J-D), and shot 201 to prevail. Ian Rivers posted a 36, with Nate Powell (40) edging Luke Garlick (41) for second place.
ESM Blue won on Aug. 31, with the Spartans’ Blue team shooting 208 to pound Fulton (269) as ESM Orange, with a 276, nearly beat the Red Raiders, too.
Rivers had a 38 at the Links at Erie Village, ahead of David Griffith’s 40 and Joe Pacheco’s 41. Each of them beat Fulton’s Lane Phillips, who led his side with 45 as, for ESM Orange, Brent Smith had a 51, Brandon Smith a 52 and Owen White a 54.
When ESM Orange lost to J-D last Tuesday afternoon, Alex Leo shot a 47, one better than White and Braedon Smith.
