Less than two weeks after starting practice schedules, it was time for area high school girls tennis teams to have their first matches of a month-long regular-season slate.
On a steamy Wednesday, West Genesee got underway and won big, toppling Syracuse East 7-0 as, in first singles, the Wildcats’ Angelina Llanos handled Asmita Bhattaria 6-0, 6-0, with Emma Pinker doing the same to Helen Vincent.
Natalie Thurston won, 6-1, 6-0, over Marian Del Valle as, on the doubles side, WG’s teams of Mikayla Mannara-Katie Viau and Anastasia Mello-Emma Yeager did not drop a game. Alyssa Congel and Mi Tran won over Yessica Chinea and Roshika Sharma 6-0, 6-1 as Sophia Lowry and Chloe Soltys handled Sophia Holtsberry and Lori Tran 6-0, 6-2.
Westhill began last Monday against Mexico and prevailed, 6-1, sweeping the singles. Grace Lesselroth topped Juliana Hernandez 6-1, 6-2, with Cami Cortez beating Kim Heagerty 6-3, 6-4 and Sophia Frost handling Juliana Smith 6-1, 6-2.
In three sets, the Warriors’ doubles team of Jillian Eckert and Madison Thomas beat Alvia Kelsey and Shelby Schumacher 6-7, 6-3, 6-0. Camille Argentieri and Zoe Hynes topped Destiny Teachout and Emma Teeter 6-1, 6-2, with Hannah Johnston and Bridget Thornton earning a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Marissa Hammond and Grace Mason.
Marcellus met Homer and took a narrow 4-3 defeat to the Trojans, with all three of the Mustangs’ points coming on the doubles side.
Kaitlyn Kemp and Morgan Walsh rolled past Sophie Burhans and Alina Heyer 6-1, 6-0, with Casey Conklin and Maddie Vetsch rolling past Kaitlyn Clune and Abby McLaughlin 6-0, 6-1.
Elsewhere, Olivia Kittelberger and Sophia Shaw handled Jane Durham and Josie Williams 6-1, 6-2. Homer won the other four matches in straight sets, dominating singles and having Molly Burhans and Ellis Han beat Kathleen DeMarie and Elaina Mahoney 6-4, 6-3.
On Wednesday, Jordan-Elbridge took a 7-0 defeat to Skaneateles in its opener. Unable to win a set in any of the matches, the Eagles did have Anisa Bort pick off some games in singles as she fell 6-2, 6-2 to the Lakers’ Hope Allyn.
