Right from the outset of its season, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls golf team has distanced itself from other Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division foes and dazzled with its skill and roster depth.
Already at 3-0 when it took on Central Square April 27 at Green Lakes, the Hornets broke its own team mark in the course of a 161-269 victory over the Redhawks.
Bailey Wallace and Maggie Bonomo led the way, both shooting 38 to set individual marks, and close behind them Nancy Loh stepped up to shoot a 41, with Grace Perry and Justine Burness both posting 44. Lucy Fowler finished with a 50.
Following that 4-0 opening week, F-M rested until last Wednesday, when it routed Cicero-North Syracuse’s Green team 171-250. Fowler went to the forefront this time, managing a 38 in warm, windy condition as Paige Freyer got a 43. Ashley Carter shot a 44 and Loh contributed a 46.
Yet that was just a prelude to Thursday’s match with Auburn where Bonomo managed to outplay three-time state champion Lindsay May as the highlight of the Hornets’ win 173-217 over the Maroons.
Bonomo shot a 36 to break her own week-old front-nine mark and edge May’s total of 37. Loh had a 44, while Burness shot a 46 and Wallace posted a 47.
The week ended Friday with F-M routing East Syracuse Minoa Blue 174-233. Bonomo cooled off to a 42, but Freyer led with a 38 as Elly Hulslander had a 47 and Perry shot 48. Bailey Murphy had the Spartans’ low round of 53.
ESM Blue went head-to-head with ESM Orange at Arrowhead. Prevailing 207-224, ESM Blue had Hannah Johnson shoot a 48 and Shannon Marcy post a 49, helped by Erica Garm and Helaina Scolaro, who both finished at 55.
On ESM Orange’s side, Emily Barnes led with a 51, just ahead of Maddy Haley’s 53 as Maggie Simpson and Camryn Humphrey both posted 60. ESM Orange also lost to Auburn 213-267, with Emily Williams shooting 62 and Bella Sylvester adding a 66.
From there, ESM Blue went on to defeat Cicero-North Syracuse Green 223-246 on Thursday. Johnson again led the Spartans, posting a 51, while Scolaro had a 54 and Garm added a 56.
Christian Brothers Academy die not make its season debut until last Wednesday, when it beat Chittenango 223-272 at Woodcrest, led by a 43 from Meghan McKeen, which was 14 shots ahead of the Bears’ low round by Shannon Koegel.
A day later, CBA lost to Marcellus 193-205 at Drumlins, despite McKeen shooting a 39 for the top individual round. Four Mustangs, including Mary Colella (43), were ahead of the 54 from Paige Snyder as Darien Tompkins got a 55 and Elizabeth Lucas a 57.
Jamesville-DeWitt lost to Oswego 151-174 last Wednesday at Butternut Creek. Lena Jones had a 40, yet the Buccaneers’ Danielle DelConte matched that number and two others, Catherine Volkomer (34) and Hailey Furlong (36) topped it.
Eden Shiomos shot a 42 and Cleo Shiomos had a 45 for J-D, who fell 195-225 to Baldwinsville as Jones posted a 50 at Timber Banks, with the Bees’ Margaret Dec leading her side by shooting 44.
Bishop Grimes defeated Chittenango 259-262 last Monday, mainly on the strength of a 51 by Olivia Minor.That score was 12 strokes better than the Bears’ low round of 63 by Shannon Koegel, which the Cobras’ Brina Deppoliti matched.
Grimes lost a day later to Utica-Notre Dame 234-272, with Minor shooting a 54 as the Jugglers’ Sarah Snyder posted a 45.
In boys golf, Manlius-Pebble Hill returned to the course last Wednesday and bashed Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 205-338.
The Trojans’ Johnny Gruninger went under par with a 33 as Grant Lewis shot a 37, with George Bruno shooting 40 and Nathan Lesch adding a 42 as Tommy Wildhack finished at 47.
In Thursday’s match, MPH rolled again, handling Bishop Ludden 205-249 as Gruninger had his second straight 33 and Lewis again shot 37, with Lesch and Bruno both posting 41.
Gruninger saved his best work for Friday, and MPH’s 207-252 win over Cazenovia. With a stunning total of 30, Gruninger set the low league mark for the spring as Lewis added a 39, with Bruno and Lesch each posting 44.
Bishop Grimes had to wait until last Monday to open its season, but went to Pulaski and, led by Anthony Falgitano, pulled out a 259-262 decision over the Blue Devils.
Falgitano shot a 39, the top individual score by five strokes over Pulaski’s Caleb Davies, more than the Cobras’ eventual winning margin. Help came from Colby Evans, who shot a 48 as Louis Pelose (56) was just ahead of Ben Schultz and Scott McPherson (58 each).
Grimes then lost to Marcellus 191-235. Even with Pelose stepping up to shoot a 37 and Falgitano adding a 41, the Mustangs got 35s from Shawn Colella and Caret Austin, plus a 39 from David Bosak.
