At last, the weather broke and the Skaneateles baseball team was able to take the field again, hoping the momentum it had built during a 3-0 start had not dissipated while waiting for the snow to melt.
Games against Phoenix, Marcellus, Homer and CBA were all lost to the weather before the Lakers were able to take the field Saturday against Central Square.
As it turned out, the unscheduled break did hurt Skaneateles, who saw a six-run lead disappear in the late stages of a 7-6 defeat to the Redhawks.
Neither team got on the board until the Lakers netted a run in the fourth inning. Then it scored five times in the fifth inning, seemingly taking control as Central Square kept struggling in the field, eventually making nine errors.
Luke Viggiano hit a solo home run, with Josh McCabe adding an RBI. Cregg Scherrer, Jimmy Liberatore, Michael Murphy, Tommy Reed, Kenny Peterson and Jacob Nesbitt scored runs.
Meanwhile, Scherrer struck out eight in his three-inning stint on the mound, but the Lakers’ 6-3 lead did not hold up. Central Square used a run in the sixth and a three-run seventh inning to pull it out.
To bounce back, Skaneateles would have to tackle Bishop Ludden, Marcellus, CBA and Weedsport, four games in four days during the week of the school break.
