Decision time has arrived for the area’s trio of high school girls swim team, all of which are expected to make big runs at their respective Section III titles this week.
Looking to defend its Class A sectional title at Nottingham, Fayetteville-Manlius began its regular-season homestretch on Oct. 20 when it hosted Baldwinsville at Cazenovia College and beat the Bees 83-79.
Hannah Kellogg needed 2:08.66 to prevail in the 200 freestyle, with Cara Campell needing 25.82 seconds to pull away and take the 50 freestyle.
Lindsay Mathews took the 100 butterfly in 1:05.28 as Meghan Seidberg, in 1:01.61, edged Lauren Hayes (1:01.88) in the 100 freestyle. Alessandra Manicone earned 202.20 points in diving, with Riley Miller (186 points) second and Francesca Femia (176.10 points) third.
Then F-M defeated Syracuse 94-83 last Tuesday night, with Campell earning a sprint sweep as she went 25.73 seconds in the 50 freestyle and also won the 100 freestyle in 57.01 seconds.
Kellogg, second in the 100 freestyle (58.36 seconds), improved to 2:07.46 in the 200 freestyle, while Addie Antshel won the 200 IM in 2:25.17. Saya Hrosar, in 1:10.02, edged Maired Egan (1:10.03) in the 100 backstroke.
Michelle Sipple won the 100 butterfly in 1:08.60 and, paired with Hayes, Antshel and Morgan Kingsley, took the 200 medley relay in 1:59.05. Sipple, Campell, Kellogg and Sasha Brown won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.62 Kingsley went 1:15.67 in the 100 breaststroke, just ahead of Katie Ottaviano’s time of 1:17 flat.
Jamesville-DeWitt is the favorite for the Class B sectional meet at Nottingham, having gone 11-1 in the regular season, including two victories last week.
The Red Rams handled Mexico 99-82 last Tuesday night, getting two race wins apiece from the trio of Amelia Hesler, Emma Galletta and Mackenzie Moore.
Hesler took first place in the 200 freestyle in 2:01.82, and then went to the 500 freestyle, winning that race in 5:29.25. Galletta went 26.23 seconds to beat Alexis Phillips (26.73) in the 50 freestyle and also winning the 100 freestyle in 57.76 seconds to Phillips’ 58.12.
As for Moore, she would beat Mexicos’ Jessie Faulkner, 2:24.80 to 2:26.82, in the 200 individual medley, and then hold off teammate Emily Ninestein, 1:06.06 to 1:06.51, in the 100 backstroke.
Ninestein was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:06.49, with Grace McGuire (1:18.27) topping Jordan Archer (1:18.80) in the 100 backstroke. Hesler, Phillips, Sawyer Parker and Audrey Norden swam the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.63.
J-D also had a top-three sweep in the diving competition, Lauren Saletsky prevailing with 213.00 points ahead of Allin Liebler-Bendix (202.10 points) and Kyra McDevitt (171.20 points).
Christian Brothers Academy, favored in the Class C sectional meet at Skaneateles, had an impressive effort at West Genesee last Wednesday night, improving to 9-2 on the season with a 100-86 victory over the Wildcats.
Julia Torell was part of four victories for the Brothers, starting with a 200 medley relay where she, along with Darien Tompkins, Lauren Kelly and Katelyn Wendt, went 1:59.44 in the 200 medley relay.
Individually, Torell won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.20 and the 500 freestyle in 5:46.47, and closed the meet by helping Tompkins, Kaitlyn Bushnell and Katie Toole edge WG by three-hundredths of a second, 4:00.77 to 4:00.80, in the 400 freestyle relay.
Elsewhere, Kelly gained her own pair of wins, going 2:22.57 in the 200 IM and claiming the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.43. Tompkins was victorious in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.56 as Bushnell won the 50 freestyle in 26.67 seconds.
Sam Lanzafame, already a state qualifier in diving, prevailed with 213.60 points, this before Bushnell, Kelly, Katelyn Wendt and Ally Howard worked together to take the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.92.
