For the second time this fall, the Liverpool girls volleyball team got the best of its neighbors from Cicero-North Syracuse, prevailing in four sets in last Monday night’s match on the Northstars’ home floor.
This was a special evening – the “Pink Out” match for breast cancer awareness as both sides wore pink T-shirts specifically for this match, instead of their usual colors.
An easy 25-12 win in the opening set may have lulled the Warriors into complacency because C-NS roared back to take the second set 25-16. A close third set followed, and the Northstars nearly went in front, but Liverpool prevailed 25-22 and then went on to take the fourth set 25-20 to end it.
Sophie Vangelov managed 23 assists, nine aces and seven digs, with Sydney Caviness adding 13 assists and two blocks. Up front, Toria Betelak led with 13 kills and four blocks, but Leehana Keeling, with 11 kills, was close behind as Madison Lapoint had nine kills. Ashley Teixeira had eight digs as Makenzie Stonebarger contributed five assists and Hayley Feldt had four kills and three blocks.
On the C-NS side, Kim Barry put together 14 assists, six kills, seven digs and four blocks, with Grace Nicolini and Olivia Johnson each earning seven kills. Emily Overend had six kills and seven digs as Madison Fortin gained nine assists. Olivia Salvador earned 19 digs to go with five kills. Madelyn Murray had three blocks, three digs and two aces.
Both sides then won on Thursday over city foes, Liverpool sweeping Nottingham and C-NS doing the same to Henninger.
The Warriors’ 25-3, 25-6, 25-23 win over the Bulldogs featured 11 aces from Vangelov, to go with 19 assists. Lapoint had five kills and three aces as Keeling, Hayley Feidt and Marissa Baskin got four kills apiece. Stonebarger and Johnson each had three kills.
Maintaining its undefeated mark against local opposition, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys volleyball team went to Fayetteville-Manlius last Monday night and, after getting through a 25-21 first set, swept the Hornets by 25-18 and 25-16 margins in the next two sets.
Josh Bigford earned 18 kills, adding three aces, two blocks and five digs. Trent Caviness had seven kills, five assists and six digs as Dylan Gesser produced seven digs. Anchoring the back line, Tristen Cummings had 24 assists, but added six kills and two aces. Kyle Alberici contributed four aces, four digs and two kills.
A rematch with Baldwinsville followed on Wednesday night, and like their Sept. 6 encounter, C-NS got the sweep, though it had to battle through close first and second sets before winning them and moving on to top the Bees 25-23, 25-21, 25-18.
Cummings, with his 18 assists (he also had four blocks), passed it to Bigford, who put away 15 kills, plus two blocks. Caviness managed three kills, three digs, two assists and two blocks as Gesser got five digs and two aces. Dan Cerqua led B’ville with 17 assists as Nate Johns earned nine kills and Aidan Priest added eight digs.
Liverpool lost last Monday to Oswego 25-14, 25-21, 25-19. Jagger Alberici had nine digs to pace the Warriors’ defense as Vincent Lee earned six assists. Eric Baker got three kills and three blocks as Connor Jones added three digs. Jason Proud led the Buccaneers with 22 assists as Kyle Kon got six aces and eight kills.
