Though it went up and down throughout last week’s action, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls tennis team still managed to prevail twice.
J-D shut out East Syracuse Minoa 7-0 last Monday afternoon, with two of the matches going to three sets. Olivia DeHoog fought past Kim Pham 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 as, in fourth doubles, Lily Fleet and Eileen Tan got past Shaina Brilbeck and MaryLouise Pontius 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.
In the other singles matches, Margaret Frank beat Maddy Woodson 6-2, 6-1 and, by those same scores, Anna Sofia Hege beat Julia Barnwell. The Red Rams’ doubles teams of Olivia Frison DeAngelis-Lena Jones, Sara Gow-Riya Sharma and Sonali Patel-Shannon Beaudry each won in straight sets.
A day later, J-D lost, 4-3, to Auburn, who proved why it was in first place in the Salt City Athletic Conference Empire division by improving its record to 10-1.
In singles, Pollock beat Celia Mattie 6-4, 6-1 and Hege got past Lindsay Jarman 6-4, 6-4. In three sets, Gajra outlasted Makayla Huntley 6-3, 5-7, 6-0. However, the Maroons won all four doubles matches, with Patel and Beaudry going to three sets, but falling to Sydney Whitford and Samantha Lesch 6-2, 4-6, 6-3,
This follwed ESM’s 4-3 win over Oswego on Sept. 15, where Kim Pham beat Alaina McMahon 6-2, 6-1 for the Spartans’ lone singles point. Sheila Hujdur and Christine Andrews paired to beat Mikayla Hardesty and Alyssa Lapetino 7-5, 6-1, with Brilbeck and Pontius topping Mattie Wallace and Julianne Verceles 6-0, 7-6 (7-4). Alexis Stone and Erin Houghtaling won, 6-4, 6-3, over Danielle DelConte and Kelly Lizotte.
ESM won again Wednesday, 4-2, over Fulton, with Pham prevailing in first singles over Katie Distin 6-4, 6-1. Hujdur and Andrews rallied in doubles to top Gabriella Bailey and Hailey Smith 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 as the teams of Stone-Houghtaling and Brilbeck-Pontius each won in straight sets.
In Thursday’s match against Auburn, the Spartans lost, 5-2, getting doubles points when Andrews and Houghtaling outlasted Rosalia Bartolatta and Nikolette Gray 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 as Hujdur and Stone paired up to beat Whitford and Lesch 7-6, 6-4. A long singles battle saw Pham take a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 defeat to Celia Mattie.
When J-D had its own match against Fulton on Friday, the Red Rams won 7-0, with straight-set singles wins from Pollock, Gajra and Hege. Beaudry and Sharma needed three sets to beat Kelsey Rosenbarker and Abigail Cuyler 7-6, 3-6, 10-7 as Patel and Tan rallied past Nanna Fischer and Chloe Gagnon 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Manlius-Pebble Hill ran into Cazenovia last Tuesday and lost, 5-2 to the Lakers. None of the Trojans’ doubles teams were able to get a point, with Halle Erwin and Genevieve Morrow getting the closest in a 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Bruno and Druke.
It was different in singles, where Anna Szombathy beat Langan 6-1, 6-3, with Parmees Fazeli dominant in a 6-3, 6-0 win over Connor. Grace Walsh led early, but could not hold it in a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Barrett.
This followed a 5-2 win over Westhil, decided by the Trojans sweeping all four doubles matches. Two of them were close ones as Fazeli, paired with Genevieve Morrow, edged Cami Cortez and Grace Lesselroth 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), while Lily Grenis and Louisa Morrow, one game from defeat, pulled out a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 decision over Katie Lesselroth and Zoe Hynes. In singles, Szombatha handled Giovanna Buccina 6-1, 6-1, with Walsh taking a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 loss to Kaleigh Danaher.
Then, after beating Pulaski 5-1 on Wednesday with singles points from Szombatha and Fazeli, the Trojans beat Bishop Grimes 7-0 on Friday afternoon as it made Senior Day a successful one.
Szombatha had a brief scare in singles, but then toppled Katie Knittel 6-4, 6-0, while Walsh beat Michaela Marturano 6-1, 6-1 and Fazeli blanked Hannah Maroney 6-0, 6-0. Grenis and Louisa Morrow led the doubles sides, topping Olivia Minor and Kate Matthews 6-2, 6-1 as the teams of Erwin-Genevieve Morrow, and Rebecca Church-TaliaBraverman also won in two sets.
Before facing MPH, Grimes defeated Mexico 4-3 on Wednesday, mostly due to a singles sweep. Abby Wilkinson beat Joline Hernandez 6-1, 6-1, with Knittel topping Kim Heagerty 6-0, 6-1 and Martuano handling Mia Morris 7-5, 6-2.
The doubles teams of Emily Cone-Lenora Cedrone and Abby Fletcher-Jenny Morabito each lost in three sets, but Hannah Maroney and Sofia Khatiwada prevailed for the Cobras’ clinching point.
