Though a few weeks had passed, and it had improved plenty, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys golf team discovered that it had not yet caught up to Baldwinsville atop the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division ranks.
In their first-place clash last Tuesday afternoon at Woodcrest Golf Club, the Hornets played quite well, yet were still done in by a Bees side that had six golfers shoot 40 or lower in a 189-197 decision.
These same sides had met Sept. 1 at Timber Banks, and F-M lost 201-207. Since then, both sides had gone undefeated, and each of them carried six-match win streaks into the rematch.
B’ville’s Maxwell Dec won the individual battle, shooting 35 for nine holes to edge the Hornets’ Kyle Gilroy, who had a 36. But the Bees took the lead when two of its golfers, Dan Reiser and Ryan Fecco, shot 38, a total just one F-M golfer, Sean Arthur, reached.
The getaway happened when Matt Shipman and Trevor Tooke each shot 39, and no other Hornets player broke 40, a number Adam Butch shot, matched by the Bees’ Ben Donohue. Just behind them, Sam DiChristina had a 41 and Cal Isley finished with a 42.
Each team had played the day before – B’ville defeating Liverpool at Timber Banks, F-M facing the Syracuse City team at Marcellus Country Club and pulling away for a 195-221 victory to tune up for the duel with the Bees.
Against Syracuse, each of the six lowest rounds belonged to the Hornets, starting with Kyle Gilroy as he posted a 37. Sean Arthur and Mike Millimaci each shot 39, with Matt LaCombe shooting a season-best 40 to match Adam Butch. Sam DiChristina added a 41 ahead of Syracuse’s Seth Lee (42) and Jon Kinane (43).
Maybe what happened against B’ville had a lingering effect, for on Friday F-M lost again, this time against Cicero-North Syracuse Blue, who came to Woodcrest and knocked off the Hornets 187-194.
Brendan Villnave led C-NS Blue with a 33, three strokes ahead of Butch, who paced F-M with a 36. Gilroy had a 38, but the Northstars’ Andrew Brunozzi topped it with a 37 and two others, Jake Nardozza and Carson Carrino, matched that 38. Arthur, LaCombe and Millimaci each posted 40.
Christian Brothers Academy was 9-2 going into the week, ready to challenge undefeated Westhill last Monday afternoon at Drumlins. Just like their early-season match-up, though, the Brothers could not keep up with the Warriors, taking a 182-209 defeat.
They had met Aug. 25 at Camillus Country Club, with Westhll prevailing 204-232. In the rematch David Gross led CBA with a 38, but four Warriors golfers tied or bettered that mark, led by Sean Dadey, who tore his way to a 33 ahead of Anthony Maglisco and David Bleskoski (36 each) and Josh Marshall (38). Jack Lester had a 40 for the Brothers as Mike Santoro shot a 42, Chris Bushnell had a 44 and Dan Angelo added a 45.
What followed, on Friday, was a narrow 217-218 defeat by CBA to Homer, the difference at the top a 41 from the Trojans’ Mike Turck at Cortland Country Club, one ahead of Lester and Mike Schafer each shooting 42. Gross, Bushnell and Angelo each shot 44, but Casey Hayes, Mitch Riter (43 each), Noah Goddard (44) and Louis Nardis (46) helped Homer hang on.
East Syracuse Minoa Blue, having gone through a mid-season slump, began to strike again in last Wednesday’s 209-237 win over Fulton.
Justin Seltzer shot a 37 at Links at Erie Village, ahead of Ian Rivers’ 39 and both of them topping the 40 from the Red Raiders’ Ean Stevenson. Ryan MacCombie had a 41 as David Griffith got a 44 and Dan Sitnik picked up a 48.
In that same match, ESM Orange shot 271, with Ryan Bova shooting a 49 and Owen White getting a 50 ahead of Joe Pacheco, Donovan Marriott (57 each) and Ryan Walsh (58).
On Friday, ESM Blue beat Auburn 211-232 at Highland, with Seltzer netting a 38. Rivers and Griffith each shot 42 as MacCombie got a 43 ahead of Luke Garlick’s 47 and Jacob Harrig’s 48. ESM Orange lost, 232-279, to Central Square, Bova improving to a 46 as no other Spartan could break 50.
Jamesville-DeWitt defeated Central Square 212-218 last Tuesday at Greenview, overcoming a 39 by the Redhawks’ Adam Woodmansee with its depth. Alvin Ratanaphan and Peter Hatton each shot 41, with Brian Fenal and Max Schulman posting top rounds of 43 and Jake Ellithorpe adding a 44.
