A long Labor Day weekend, plus rained-out matches last Tuesday afternoon, was the last real respite for the area’s high school girls tennis team before a whirlwind of matches would cover most of the September calendar.
When the four-day break ended, play resumed last Wednesday with Fayetteville-Manlius getting a good challenge from West Genesee, but still able to subdue the Wildcats in a 5-2 decision.
Back in 2014, it was WG that ended F-M’s epochal 21-year, 329-match win streak, but since then the Hornets have again gone without a blemish, which included this latest battle with the Wildcats in Camillus.
Sweeping all three singles matches, F-M had Maggie Bonomo beat Mikayla Mannara 6-2, 6-4, with Katerina Attalah routing Katie Viau 6-1, 6-0 and Phoebe Wang rolling past Greta Hahn 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, WG got the split, seeing Angelina Llanos and Nichole Thurston beat Anna Manta and Diana Polovick 6-4, 6-4, with Anastasia Mello and Phoebe Nelson taking three sets to beat Keara Polovick and Maddy Drapeau 6-7 (7-4), 6-3, 6-4.
F-M countered, though, by having Cassie Wojtasiewicz and Rachel Liu beat Danielle Bertelli and Andrea Andreeva 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, while Patrice Calancie and Martha Welker got a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Mi Tran and Emma Yeager.
Then the Hornets handled Cicero-North Syracuse 7-0 on Friday, with Polovick battling through a first-set tie-breaker in singles before beating Ava Breitbeck 7-6, 6-3. Wang beat Nicole Perrigo 6-3, 6-1 and Manta topped Hanna Costello 6-0, 6-1, with the doubles sides all winning in two sets, the closest of them Calancie and Welker’s 6-1, 6-3 win over Cara Temple and Danielle Dottler.
Also unbeaten going into the week, Christian Brothers Academy had no trouble in last Tuesday’s 7-0 shutout of Westhill. Neither Grace DelPino nor Giselle Vlassis lost a game in their singles matches as Rena Steele took a bit longer, but beat Kaleigh Danaher 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, the closest match came when Anna Sasser and Grace Catalano got past Zoe Hynes and Cami Cortez 6-2, 6-4. Mikayla Sanutlli and Grace Coyne handled Grace and Katie Lesselroth 6-2, 6-2, with the teams of Mary Kilmartin-Allison Brown and Glowaki-Calista Albring not dropping a game in either of their matches.
CBA won another 7-0 decision on Friday, this one over Pulaski. Five matches were contested, and in none of them did the Brothers drop a game as Steele and Vlassis won in singles 6-0, 6-0 over, respectively, Chyanna LaCelle and Katarina Kozlowski, with Santulli-Coyne, Glowaki-Albring and Sasser-Catalano doing the same in doubles.
Jamesville-DeWitt only completed four matches against Fulton last Wednesday, but won them all to earn the sweep. Tara Pollock won, 6-0, 6-0, over Erin Waloven, with Inka Gajra blanking Gabriella Bailey 6-0, 6-0 and Anna Sofia Hege topping Hailey Smith 6-2, 6-0. Olivia Frison-DeAngelis and Lena Jones combined to win in doubles.
Another shutout took place on Thursday, J-D handling Syracuse West 7-0 as Pollock and Hege both had 6-0, 6-0 wins over, respectively, Ana McGough and Maddie Rioux. Gajra got past Emily Sanborn 6-3, 6-1 as none of the doubles teams lost more than one game in any of their sets.
Manilus-Pebble Hill handled Marcellus 6-1 last Wednesday, sweeping through singles as Anna Szombatha, Grace Walsh and Parmees Fezeli lost just three games in their six sets of singles competition.
It took a comeback in doubles for the Mustangs to get its lone point as Kaitlyn Kemp and Morgan Walsh beat Eden Hildebrandt and Eva Englich 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. The Trojans won the other three matches in two sets, the closest of them Lily Grennis and Genevieve Morrow getting past Mikayla Cusick and Alyssa Goodwin 7-5, 7-5.
Bishop Grimes took a 6-1 defeat to Chittenango back on Sept. 1. Elizabeth Wolaver did get a 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 singles win over Shannon Koegel, but the Bears won the rest of the matches in two sets, the closest of them Katie Knittel’s 6-4, 6-3 loss to Emma Bailey.
Grimes had its match with Skaneateles rained out, as was a match between CBA and MPH. After beating Chittenango, the Cobras got a test at Cazenovia on Friday
East Syracuse Minoa was shut out Wednesday by Auburn 7-0, with only the first singles match going beyond two sets as Kim Pham took a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 defeat to the Maroons’ Celia Mattie. A defeat to Cortland followed on Friday.
