In between all the raindrops, the Baldwinsville softball team did get in a pair of games, winning them both.
And none were wilder than last Thursday’s battle with Fayetteville-Manlius, where the Bees appeared to run away late, only to nearly get caught in a raucous seventh inning before escaping with a 14-13 victory over the Hornets.
These two sides exchanged runs throughout the first four innings, leaving it tied 6-6. Then the fun started as B’ville scored three runs in the top of the sixth and then, with five more runs in the seventh, extended its lead to 14-6, and it looked over.
But F-M nearly made a miraculous comeback, batting around in the bottom of the seventh and plating seven runs before Kayla Young was able to record the final out, part of a day where she doubled three times, scored three runs and earned four RBIs.
Allie Hotchkiss hit a home run and matched Young’s four-RBI output, with Kaycee Hawk getting three hits and four runs scored. Jillian Dunn doubled twice and drove in three runs as Hawk and Madelyn Shuler had one RBI apiece.
A day earlier, B’ville hosted Auburn and beat the Maroons 9-5, getting a 2-0 lead in the third inning and then, after the Maroons cut it to 2-1, breaking things open with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Hawk finished with three hits as she and Shuler both drove in two runs. Young, Brittany Cole and Claire McAllister got one RBI apiece as Madison Ascioti scored a pair of runs. Despite a late Auburn push that included Grace Baranick’s home run, Young and Cole, combining their pitching efforts, were able to earn the win.
If the weather held up, B’ville would visit reigning Section III Class AA champion Liverpool on Monday and host Cicero-North Syracuse on Wednesday before going to Central Square Friday and meeting up with Oneida on Saturday.
