Defeats to the likes of West Genesee and Cicero-North Syracuse had set back the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team, but it would have a great opportunity to turn that around as the second portion of CNY Counties League play got going.
The Bees would visit Liverpool last Tuesday night, and against a team it beat 17-8 in early April, B’ville would nearly match that score and, in fact, top it by putting together a 17-7 victory over the Warriors.
Only up by three, 7-4, at halftime of the rematch, B’ville pulled clear behind a well-balanced attack that had four different players earn hat tricks. Maria Henwood scored five times, with Peyton Fleming getting three goals and four assists as Sara Goodwin and Katie Pascale also scored three times.
Hannah Johnson contributed a goal and two assists, with single tallies also going to Juila Pelcher and Monica Lannier. Liverpool did not have anyone net more than one goal. As seven different players – Brittany Halpin, Veronica Brancato, Maia Henry, Megan Fitzpatrick, Abby Hope, Colleen Tifft and Zoe Morgenroth – found the net.
Now, on Thursday night, B’ville ventured to Fayetteville-Manlius, a team it beat 9-7 in mid-April and, at this moment, was reeling from back-to-back losses to Skaneateles (in overtime) and West Genesee.
Here, the Bees would fall victim to the Hornets’ desire for payback in a 19-10 defeat, a result made more disappointing by the way B’ville had fought back after falling behind 6-0 in the first half, using a series of goals to pull within two, 9-7, by the time they reached the break.
Sufficiently scared, F-M would blitz the Bees with six straight goals to start the second half and all but put the game away. Fleming and Goodwin each had two goals and two assists, with Johnson and Pascale also scoring twice. Pelcher had one goal and one assist as Natalie Farnett had the other goal.
F-M would do to B’ville what the Bees had done to Liverpool – namely, have a quartet of players net three or more goals. Annie Steigerwald scored five times, adding an assist, while Amanda Cramer had four goals and two assists. Gemma Addonizio had her own four-goal outing and Kiera Shanley had three goals.
At home all of this week, B’ville hosts on Thursday a West Genesee side coming off big wins last week over F-M and Christian Brothers Academy, and then take on Shaker (Section II) Saturday afternoon before closing the regular season May 16 against Cicero-North Syracuse.
