Early-week rainouts affected the schedules for the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool boys tennis teams, but with nicer weather, the matches resumed.
For C-NS, who was 1-4 going into the week and had dropped a 6-1 decision to Liverpool on April 20, things did not improve in the matches that followed, a loss to Auburn and then last Wednesday’s 5-2 defeat to Oneida in a non-league match.
The Northstars beat the Indians once in singles and once in doubles. Justin Kegebein got the singles point, who rallied from behind and, in a third-set tie-breaker, pulled out a 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Kevin Spooner. Elsewhere, Edwin Hirsh lost, 6-1, 6-0, to Aidan Hicks, with Evan Harberek falling to Ajay Hicks 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles, C-NS saw Gehrig Sarosey and Josh Matyasik work their way to a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Oneida’s tandem of Nolan Rush and Johnathan Locke. However, the teams of Trey Nordin-Abbey-John Barraco and Ryan Houser-Jarrod Stranger each lost by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores.
On Thursday, Liverpool faced Auburn, and it managed just a single point in a 6-1 defeat to the Maroons. It came in doubles, where in three sets Jonathan Kline and Brayden Cabrey fought past Matthias Ballard and Andrew Giannettino 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
A long three-set battle saw Evan Maestri and Caleb Munski take a 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (7-5), 6-2 defeat to Auburn’s Trevor Bohannon and Luke Parker, while the teams of Ben White-Alex Alejo and Jeff Noll-Andrew Johnson lost in two sets.
In singles, Anthony Puma had a 7-5, 6-0 defeat to William Clark, which is more games than Caleb Arnold could earn falling to Michael Morrissey 6-1, 6-3 as Brandon Davis ran into Auburn singles star Scott Minnoe and took a 6-0, 6-0 defeat.
Then Liverpool had to run across unbeaten Fayetteville-Manlius on Friday, unable to get close to the Hornets in a 7-0 defeat. Davis, Puma and Arnold could not earn a game in any of their singles matches, while in doubles Maestri and White took a 6-1, 6-0 defeat to Taran Judge and Chris Lansing.
Meanwhile, C-NS lost, 6-1, to West Genesee, with Connor Millias getting the Northstars on the board thanks to his 6-0, 6-2 win over Stefan Atanasov, though Kegebein and Hirsh both lost in straight sets.
The Wildcats claimed all four of the doubles matches, though Barraco and Nordin-Abbey held up well in their 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 defeat to Alex Argiro and Jimmy Harter. Elsewhere, Sarosey and Matyasik fell to Ahmed Mahmoud and David Neri 6-4, 6-4. Jake Tesfai and James Coral had a 6-2, 6-4 loss to John Northrop and Noah Ruston.
