Each of the Baldwinsville track and field teams carried lots of momentum into last Wednesday’s CNY Counties League showdown with Liverpool at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, but neither of them would beat the Warriors.
In the boys meet, it proved particularly frustrating for the Bees, who lost by the closest possible margin, 71-70, to the Warriors, each side claiming an equal number of victories, but Liverpool doing just a bit better in other placements.
Still, B’ville swept the sprint races, starting with Jack Buis going 11.69 seconds to take the 100-meter dash as Kieran Sheridan took the 400-meter dash in 52.88 seconds and Greg Porceng battling to first place in the 200-meter dash in 29.78 seconds.
Also, Justin Goodridge broke the one-minute mark to win the 400 hurdles in 59.68 seconds as Alex Garcia threw the shot put 45 feet to prevail. Buis added a winning long jump of 17’6 ½” as Kevin Starr was first in the high jump, clearing 5’2”.
Where Liverpool did best was in distance races, especially Ty Brownlow, who swept to victories in the mile (4:40.61) and 3,200-meter run (9:59 flat) as teammate Steve Shultz claimed the 800-meter run in 2:04.57. Shultz and Brownlow also helped the Warriors’ 4×800 team blaze to a time of 8:10.61.
The girls meet saw B’ville fall to Liverpool 92-45, with the Bees struggling to keep up with the Warriors in the sprints and dropping five of six field events.
Only Adrianna Straughter won twice, clearing 4’8” in the high jump and getting first place in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.33 seconds. Karen Ekure took the 200 in 27.13 seconds and Shylea Dukat went 1:08.80 to win the 400 hurdles. Jenna Schultz paced Liverpool with wins in the 1,500 and 3,000-meter runs.
Two days before taking on Liverpool, both of B’ville’s teams would roar to victory during last Monday’s Tully Spring Break Invitational. the boys Bees had 217 points, nearly triple the total of runner-up Owego Free Academy (73 points), while the girls Bees earned 110 points to hold off Lansing (102 points) and prevail.
In a 1-2-3 sweep in the 400 sprint, Porceng, in 50.91 seconds, prevailed over Sheridan (51.60) and Evan Vannatta (52.61), good for 24 points. Then Sheridan took the 800-meter run in 2:06.09, edging out Garrett Vannatta (2:06.42) for the top spot.
Porceng was second (23.74 seconds) and Goodridge third (24.60 seconds) in the 200-meter dash, But Goodridge did get a victory when he paired with Buis, Evan DaPrano and Latrell Lewis to dominate the 4×100 relay, winning in 47.08 seconds when no else broke the 50-second mark.
Kenny Stehle prevailed twice for the B’ville boys, going 17.02 seconds to claim the 110 high hurdles as Nate Cutie (17.91 seconds) finished fourth, and also beating the field in the 400 hurdles in 57.91 seconds as Goodridge (1:01.31) and Josh Scholten (1:02.82) completed another top-three sweep.
Buis, in 11.26 seconds, was right behind Mexico’s Logan Burrows (11.23) in the 100-meter dash as Hudson Miller (11.97 seconds) finished fifth to go with his sixth-place finish in the 200. Adam Davis was second in the 3,200-meter run in 10:07.96, with Ben Timmons third in 10:28.30. Connor McManus ran the mile in 4:49.04 to get second place behind Owego’s Clayton Wolfe (4:36.20)
McManus paired with Nick Kruger, John Arvantides and Spencer Bruce to finish second in the distance medley relay in a time of 12:22.51. The Bees were also fourth (3:53.47) in the 4×400 relay and fifth (9:33.22) in the 4×800 relay.
Austin Catalano won the triple jump, his top leap of 38 feet 5 ¾ inches beating a field that included Kruger (36’4”) in fourth place. Catalano also had a fourth-place long jump of 17’10 ½” as Starr (16’11 ¼”) gained sixth place.
Gabe Horan won the shot put by tossing it 44/4 ¼”, prevailing as teammate Alex Garcia was third, throwing it 42’10”. Judson Fletcher joined in by claiming the discus with a throw of 124’9” as Ben Iven was third, heaving it 114’2”, and Horan got fourth place with a 112-foot effort.
Starr was third in the high jump, clearing 5’8”, while Jaeho Lee got fourth place in the pole vault by topping 10 feet.
In the girls meet, Straughter won the 100 hurdles in 16.52 seconds, the only competitor to go below 17 seconds. Then she prevailed in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, two inches ahead of the field.
Courtney Clute earned her own victory in the 400 sprint, going 1;08.26 to beat Remsen’s Brynne Myers (1:09.65) by more than a second. Dukat needed 1:09.85 to prevail in the 400 hurdles, with Mackenzie Wodka fourth in 1:14.27.
Anna Miller, winning the shot put, threw it exactly 31 feet, chased by Danielle Marsell, who was third with a toss of 28’3 ½”. Jenna Wallace threw the discus 90 feet to take second place, with Marsell fifth (85’11”) and Miller in seventh place.
Lauren Addario was second (13.06 seconds) to Watertown’s Haleigh Foster (12.97) in the 100 sprint, with Ekure third in 13.08 seconds. But Ekure would take the 200 in 26.76 seconds, with Foster (27.86 seconds) in the runner-up spot and the Bees’ Jordyn Boutilier seventh. Addario also got third place (31’8 ½”) in the triple jump.
Nadine Dickter got fourth place in the 3,000-meter run in 12:32.08, with Anika Archer (12:41.11) sixth. Elizabeth Fawwaz got a fourth-place time of 5:21.36 in the 1,500-meter run. B’ville also took sixth in the 4×400 in 5:06.59.
