Within short order, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls swim team has found itself in a race with Fayetteville-Manlius to see who finishes atop the CNY Counties League standings.
And though the two sides don’t meet head-to-head until Oct. 21, they are eying each other, with the Hornets prevailing at Skaneateles to go to 5-0 last Wednesday just as the Northstars were turning back Auburn 96-76 that same night at Le Moyne College.
Going 1-2-3 in the diving competition, C-NS saw Miranda Frascatore prevail with a season-best 211.0 points. Kiersten Coates was second, with 181.55 points, while Laura Gerber got third place with 164.6 points.
Coates races, too, and right before the diving began, she went 25.98 seconds to get first place in the 50-yard freestyle, with Olivia Griffin (26.37 seconds) in second place. Brooke Fedi won twice as, in the 200 individual medley, she pulled away and prevailed in 2:21.61, and then, later in the meet, she claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.51.
Lauren Thorne also claimed two victories, taking the 200 freestyle in 2:05.45 over Auburn’s Hannah Foster (2:06.75) and beating Foster again, 5:38.17 to 5:41.02, in the 500 freestyle. Griffin was second in the 100 freestyle in 59.40 seconds, ahead of Sarah Walter (1:00.63) and Cassie Baldwin (1:00.96), while Amy Bubb was third in the 100 butterfly.
C-NS nearly got a relay sweep in three close races. Baldwin, Bubb, Coates and Sara Dembowski held off Auburn, 2:04.83 to 2:05.62, in the 200 medley before Walter, Griffin and Thorne joined Coates to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:47.07 to the Maroons’ 1:47.24. Fedi, Thorne, Walter and Grace Devinney went 4:00.59 in the 400 freestyle relay, just behind Auburn’s 4:00.31.
A day later, Liverpool saw its girls swim team venture to New Hartford, and with each point important, the Warriors had to wait until late in the meet to get all that it needed to earn a 96-90 victory over the Spartans.
Sydnie Sovinsky joined Ali Testone, Avery Clarke and Emma Van Houte to claim the opening 200 medley relay in 2:00.10. Then Sovinsky tore through the 50 freestyle in 25.30 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 58.58 seconds, turning back a great challenge from New Hartford’s Alexis Falvo (59.17 seconds) in the latter race.
Testone would also prevail twice, pulling away to win the 200 IM in 2:19.84 before a pivotal 100 breaststroke where, in a time of 1:13.76, Testone edged New Hartford’s Mermia Kulosman (1;14.67) to earn the clinching points.
Just as important was Liverpool’s 1-2-3 sweep in diving. Alyssa Vadala set a new season mark, amassing 296.25 points as Kelley Townley was second with 236.00 points and Ashleigh Reinhardt, with 211.7 points, took third place.
Jaida Fox, in 58.84 seconds, prevailed in the 100 freestyle while also taking third in the 200 IM. Maddie Rose went 5:53.79 to finish second in the 500 freestyle, but was part of a win in the 200 freestyle relay, where Fox, Clarke and Sovinsky joined her and the Warriors got first place in 1:48.26.
