Dreams of spots on the medal podium occupied the Skaneateles girls track and field team as it went back to Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium last weekend to take part in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet.
And the Lakers would earn a medal in the 4×100 relay. Seniors Katelyn Ellison and Amanda Wetmore, joined by junior Angela Krause and freshman Cecilia Marrinan, finished in 49.79 seconds, putting them in fifth place though Depew also had 49.79.
Tapestry Charter, a Section VI school from Buffalo, won the event as Nia Stevens, Kim Bostic, Taylor Hunter and Esquisite Dunnigan finished in 49.30 seconds, edging out Rondout Valley (49.30 seconds) for that top spot.
At that same C-NS venue in May, the Lakers’ 4×400 relay team of sophomores Mia Grasson and Shannan Roberts, junior Maddie Peterson and senior Olivia Gage had set a school record in the 4×400 relay with a time of 3:58.81, and were the fastest Division II (small schools) qualifier as the state meet got underway.
However, Skaneateles would commit a false start and not get into the race, and then watch as Christian Brothers Academy’s quartet of Anna Schug, Claire Bargabos, Katie Lacasse and Dominic Morganti won in 3;59.04, a time slower than what Skaneateles accomplished a few weeks earlier. Ironically, CBA had not finished in the 4×100, where the Lakers had medaled.
Individually, Grasso took part in the Division II high jump on Saturday afternoon following a two-hour weather delay. Clearing 4 feet 10 inches, Grasso matched CBA’s Kiana Ferguson as they tied for 10th in Division II, with Cambridge’s Olivia Mooney clearing 5’6” to prevail and Sarah Kowpak (Archbishop Malloy) the overall champion when she cleared 5’8”.
