A pair of 1-2 sweeps in field events would help the Westhill-Bishop Ludden boys track and field team fend off the challenge of Christian Brothers Academy and win the Section III Class B-1 championship at its home venue on Thursday afternoon.
The Warriors finished with 143 points to the Brothers’ 125, while the other local sides did quite well, too. Marcellus, with 62 points, claimed fourth place, while Solvay had 55 points as Holland Patent finished third with 78 points.
It all started in the shot put, where Sean Corbett, throwing it 43 feet 9 ¼ inches, prevailed and Westhill-Ludden teammate Will Swartwood was second by going 41’6 ½”. Ramy Guindy added a fifth-place throw of 39’10”, trailing Solvay’s Jaidin Jackson, who was third with a throw of 41’ ¼”.
Joe Connor was victorious in the high jump, clearing 5 feet 10 inches with fewer misses than Marcellus’ Sean Raymond, who was second. Solvay’s Tony Matysuk was sixth (5’6”) as his teammates, Garrett Lee and Nate Gardner, tied for seventh.
Keandre Sanders would top Connor in the triple jump, as Sanders had a best attempt of 41’7 ¼” and Connor, going 40’6 ¾”, made it a 1-2 effort. In the long jump, Sanders, with a leap of 20’8 ¼”, was second to Skaneateles’ Tommy Hagen (20’11 ½”) as Connor got a third-place leap of 20’3 ¾”.
Sanders managed a fourth-place time of 11.72 seconds in the 100-meter dash and, in the 4×100 relay, paired with Adam French, Cody Badman and Evan Watt as they finished a close second (45.82 seconds) to CBA (45.73 seconds). Watt, Badman, Ben Hunter and Cal Niezabytowski were third in the 4×400 in 3:38.26.
Bryan King would clear 12 feet in the pole vault, leaving him in second place as Holland Patent’s Tucker Ofalt cleared 13’6. Watt was sixth (10’6”) and Ben Eassa seventh (10 feet) as King, in 15.66 seconds, gained second place in the 110 high hurdles behind HP’s Eddie Callahan (15.53 seconds) as Will Ringwood was sixth in 17.48 seconds.
Patrick McGuane led Marcellus, winning the 400-meter dash in 51.76 seconds over CBA’s Tom SanGiacomo (52.07). McGuane also helped the Mustangs’ 4×800 team relay team prevail, joining Matt Strempel, Sean Raymond and Joe Riccardi as Marcellus finished in 8:36.81, well clear of HP (8:48.63) at the line. Strempel was fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:03.48.
On his own, Riccardi contended in the 3,200-meter run, his time of 10:34.69 second behind CBA’s Dominic Morganti (10:18.72) as Westhill-Ludden’s Garnet Remillard was third in 10:48.10 and the Mustangs’ Michael Brown was sixth in 11:27.21 and the Warriors’ Jack Savage (11:30.11) was seventh.
Neizabytowski, Jake Suddaby, Alex Ladstatter and Cade Van Ornam finished third in the 4×800 in 8:54.67, with Suddaby also fourth in the 3,200 (10:50.78) and third in the mile in 4:42.26, two spots ahead of Ethan Mosure, who was fifth in 4:48.69. Savage took ninth place in 5:08.17 as Ladstatter rose to third place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:08.50 and Caleb Wetherell was fourth in the triple jump with a 40-foot attempt.
In the 4×400, Marcellus had Mike Provvidenti, James Murphy, Riley Burns and Nick Distefano take fourth place in 46.50 seconds. Provvidenti got to fourth place in the 200-meter dash in 23.89 seconds, two spots ahead of French (24.41 seconds), and was eighth in the 400 (54.25 seconds) as Murphy got eighth place in the 100 in 12.11 seconds. Grayson Hoag was sixth (11:24.28) and Andrew Marsh was seventh (11:36.19) in the steeplechase.
Solvay’s Nick Ferri emerged victorious in the five-event pentathlon. Trailing Westhill-Ludden’s Owen Hoyne by a narrow margin going to the final event, the 1,500-meter run, Ferri ran 5:02.57 to Hoyne’s 5:08.18 and finished with 2,403 points, Ferri beating Hoyne (2,388 points) by 15 points.
The Bearcats’ Colton Francemone, disqualified in the 110 high hurdles, roared back to win the 400 hurdles in 58.23 seconds as King finished second in 59.44 seconds and Marcellus got Andrew Marsh in fifth place in 1:05.05. Solvay’s Max Melnyk was sixth in 1:08.40.
Jackson, in addition to his third-place finish in the shot put, got to second place in the discus with a throw of 124’11” that only Skaneateles’ Chase Corcoran (136’8”) could top. Francemone was third in the triple jump (40’2 ½) behind Sanders and Connor, while Lee was fifth with 39’11”.
Jonah Cavallo tore to second place in the 800 in 2:00.82 behind Syracuse ITC’s Solomon Lawrence, who won in 1:59.81. Jordan Devereaux was ninth in the 100 in 12.12 seconds, just ahead of Lamar Flood (12.14 seconds) in 11th place, with Devereaux, Flood, Sam Jenkins and Mark Carpenter fifth in the 4×100 in 47.06 seconds, while Mike Tomoroska got seventh place in the long jump, going 19’2” as Lee (18’8 ¼”) was 10th.
