Having climbed to the top of the CNY Counties League, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls golf team wanted to stay there as May got underway, but first it had to dodge the raindrops that messed up many different local schedules.
It wasn’t raining last Tuesday afternoon, though, so the Hornets went to Liverpool and again proved dazzling while it pulled away to beat the Warriors 169-214.
Over nine holes at Liverpool Country Club, Bailey Wallace posted a 39, taking individual honors by one shot over Madison Kinsgley. Maggie Bonomo had a 43 and Justine Burness earned a 47, with Mia Avotins pacing Liverpool as she shot a 46.
F-M returned to Green Lakes on Thursday and earned its second win of the season against Cicero-North Syracuse. The 189-222 victory over the Northstars included a 42 from Kingsley that beat all other individuals by six shots.
Campbell Kennedy stepped up for the Hornets and gained a 48, beating out Bonomo’s 49 as Wallace finished with a 50. No one on C-NS matched those efforts, though Morgan Siechen (daughter of Jamesville-DeWitt girls basketball coach Rob Siechen) led her side with a 51.
Speaking of J-D, the undefeated Red Rams had to wait until Thursday to play its next match – but were ready for it, going to Woodcrest and defeating the Chittenango Bears 212-241.
Shooting a 49, Lena Jones took individual honors by four shots over Alex Catanzarite, whose 53 was accompanied by Zoe Pippens and Lizzie Redmore each posting 55. No one on Chittenango’s roster shot as well, with Rachel Cleary’s 58 pacing the Bears.
Though other matches were rained out last Monday, Christian Brothers Academy did compete, and managed to hand Westhill its first defeat of the season in a 202-211 decision at Camillus Country Club.
Megan McKeen led the way, shooting a terrific 44 for nine holes. Liz Kip had a 49, while Paige Nicholson got a 54. Three others – Mackenzie Griffith, Sophie Maltone and Katie Cool – each finished with 55. For the Warriors, Gabbi LoCourto had a 52 and Angela Vigliotti a 55, but its top player most of the season, Shannon Bunce, struggled to a 56.
Then East Syracuse Minoa took its turn against Westhill a day later – and also won, topping the Warriors 196-215 in one of its most impressive team efforts in recent memory.
Audrey Rivers shot a 44 at Arrowhead Golf Club, with Hannah Owens getting a 47 ahead of Bunce’s 49. Bailey Murphy joined in with a 51 and Kaleigh Graves closed it out with a 54, all of them ahead of the Warriors’ duo of LoCourto and Lydia Stevenson, who both shot 55.
CBA, meanwhile, took out Skaneateles 202-217 at Drumlins, with Kipp and McKeen both at the forefront again with matching rounds of 47, each of them ahead of the Lakers’ Jill Barker, who led her side with a 49.
Skaneateles rebounded Wednesday to defeat ESM 209-212, and on Thursday CBA saw its win streak halted in a 217-232 loss to Marcellus where Kip had a 54 and McKeen had a 55, with Annie Kilmartin adding a 59. Each of them chased the Mustangs’ Hannah Abbott, who shot a 46 as her teammate, Mary Colella, posted a 49.
Manlius-Pebble Hill and Bishop Grimes had a head-to-head boys golf match rained out last Monday afternoon, but the Trojans did play a day later and won a tough 201-209 decision over the Port Byron Panthers.
Largely, this was due to the strong round of Johnny Gruninger, who blazed to a season-best 31, three shots ahead of Port Byron’s Kieran Hermann. Grant Lewis helped out as he shot a 41 on MPH’s side.
Grimes saw its match with Bishop Ludden on Wednesday again rained out, but MPH did take on Fabius-Pompey and rolled past the Falcons 213-253. Gruninger shot a 37, with Lewis improving to a 40 as George Bruno, with a 42, and Bryce Church, with a 44, helped out.
Then, on Friday, MPH had its own match with Ludden and won big, 209-272, again with Gruninger at the forefront thanks to his 38. Bruno improved to a 41 to beat out Church and Lewis, who had matching rounds of 42.
