Rest may have helped the Cazenovia boys golf team – at least for one match.
The end of the school break meant the resumption of the Lakers’ season, and after some mid-April struggles Cazenovia found much better form during last Tuesday afternoon’s 215-302 rout of Altmar-Parish-Williamstown.
Cody Thorp, in particular, flourshed, going under par with his nine-hole 34 at Cazenovia Country Club. Hayden Fasset and Trevor Nourse both shot 44, with Geoff Christiansen adding a 45. Alex Pezzi gained a 48 and Ryan Mistur finished with a 50.
Off until Friday, Cazenovia could not reclaim that earlier success in a 212-228 defeat to Marcellus, despite Thorp shooting the top individual score of 38 at CCC.
Pezzi improved to a 46, with Christiansen (47), Nourse (48) and Fasset (49) close behind, but that couldn’t keep up with the deep pool of Marcellus golfers. Six Mustangs shot 48 or lower, led by Carter Austin and Jay Colella, who both posted 40.
Girls golf teams resumed following their spring breaks and Cazenovia hosted Marcellus, unable to keep up with the Mustangs in a 209-240 defeat.
Erin Howles shot a 55 at Cazenovia Country Club, but three Marcellus golfers – Mary Colella (48), Hannah Abbott (50) and Grace Alexander (55) – beat that total. Maleigha Ellithorpe shot a 58 as Abbie Auero (63) was one shot ahead of Liz Shephard’s 64.
Turning it around on Wednesday afternoon, the Lakers defeated Oswego 225-250. Amid wind and rain at CCC, Howles led all individuals with a 51, one shot ahead of Ellithorpe’s 52. Auero and Carolyn Benn both shot 62 as the Buccaneers’ top golfers, Olivia Dowdle and Lydia Tyron, both finished with 61.
Chittenango didn’t return to action until Thursday afternoon, when it ran into OHSL leader Jamesville-DeWitt and lost, 212-241, to the Red Rams.
Rachel Cleary shot a 58 for the Bears. Sarah Schmidt and Hannah Turner each posted 60, with Jennie McIntosh adding a 63. On J-D’s side, Lena Jones led with a 49 as Alex Catanzarite (53), Lizzie Redmore and Zoe Pippens (55 each) also played well.
Two more matches followed, the Bears falling 197-233 to Skaneateles as Schmidt shot a 54, beating out Pierce (58), Turner (60) and Shannon Koegel (61), but behind a quartet of Lakers that included Jillian Barker (47), Karah Blair (49), Jenna Field (50) and Addison Gremly (51).
When Chittenango took its shot at Marcellus, the Bears fell, 201-243, though here it was Cleary leading her side with a 55. Bailey contributed a 59 as Colella, with a 43, had, by far, the best individual score.
