A strong season for the Skaneateles indoor track and field teams would close with its top athletes competing at Cornell University’s Barton Hall during last Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.
Contending in the girls 4×200 relay, the Lakers’ quartet of Mia Grasso, Amanda Wetmore, Angela Krause and Maddie Peterson (with Olivia Gage and Cecilia Marrinan as alternates) ran to a time of one minutes, 48.32 seconds in the qualifying round, advancing to the finals.
Once in the championship round a few hours later, Grasso, Wetmore, Krause and Peterson could not improve on that time, but still finished in 1;50.08 and took seventh place. Rush-Henrietta (Section V) prevailed in 1:41.94, anchored by Sammy Watson, who also won state individual titles in the 600 and 1,000-meter runs.
Grasso, on her own, was part of the girls high jump. Clearing 5 feet 2 inches, Grasso beat out Section III teammate Alexandria Payne (Jamesville-DeWitt), who could only clear 5’1”. Midlakes’ Aubrianna Lantrip topped 5’8” to win the state title by one inch over Archbishop Molloy’s Sarah Kowpak.
Tommy Hagen was the lone boys representative for Skaneateles after winning the sectional state qualifier in the long jump.
And Hagen held up quite well in the state field, finishing 12th out of 30 entrants with a best leap of 21 feet 4 inches on his second attempt, having also gone 20’1 ¼” in his first attempt and fouling on his third attempt. Becaon’s Terrel Davis won with a top leap of 23’7”.
