With plenty of talent and determination on hand, both of the Baldwinsville track and field teams wasted little time demonstrating what kind of force it will be in the CNY Counties League this spring.
The Bees roared past West Genesee Wednesday afternoon, prevailing 99-42 in the boys meet at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium and also winning big over the Wildcats, 104-37, in the companion meet held in Camillus.
During the boys meet, Alec Peinkofer won the mile race in 4:38.1 and followed it up by going 800 meters in 2:03.1 to prevail there, too. Josh Perez completed the distance-race sweep with a 3,200-meter clocking of 10:01.7.
Nate Wicks, who prevailed in the 400-meter dash (51.6 seconds), also helped Jeff Mahar, Dan Walker and Brennan LaQue race through the 4×400 in 3:38.6, part of a relay sweep. Perez and Peinkofer, with Andy Fleming and Jack Martin, ran the 4×800 in 9:27.9 as LaQue, Wicks, Mahar and Dan Walker won the 4×400 in 3:38.6.
Of the five field events, B’ville won four of them. Shawn Calnan went 37’8” in the triple jump and won the high jump by clearing 5’6”, while Tom Ancilotti had a top discus throw of 114’4 ½” and Logan Maar cleared 10 feet to win the pole vault.
Over at West Genesee, the girls Bees really spread things around. Only Gabby Jordan won a pair of individual events, sprinting through the 100 in 12.8 seconds and recording a top long jump of 15’5”. She also teamed with Cierra Allen, Angelica Tomasello and Stephanie Vasteno as the Bees won the 4×100 in 51.8 seconds.
On her own, Allen ran the 400 sprint in 1:00.7, with Hannah Wood taking the 100 hurdles (16.9 seconds). Mackenzie Ross was first in the 800 in 2:25.9 as Rachael Miller, in 5:04.2, pulled away in the 1,500-meter run and Danielle Piontkowski (1:16.2) was victorious in the 400 hurdles.
B’ville swept all of the relays, too. Ross, Marissa Lathrop, Katie Wicks and Julia Johnson covered the 4×400 in 4:25.6 after Julia Johnson helped Nicole Johnson, Kelley Hull and Meghan Hull emerge with a victory in the 4×800 in 10:21.6.
Carlie McNamara threw the discus 89’5 ½”, while Emily Soeder cleared 4’10” in the high jump and Melissa Voyer won the triple jump with a top effort of 31’5 ½”.
During Friday’s East Syracuse-Minoa Invitational, the girls Bees endured a dramatic change in weather, from warm and windy to cold and wet, and picked up 23 points to tie Skaneateles for sixth place among 21 sides as Holland Patent (43 points) finished on top.
Except for the shot put and discus, every field event got canceled when the bad weather showed up, and it also reduced the schedule on the oval. But the discus did take place, and McNamara won it with a tremendous throw of 101 feet, with HP’s Harley Buczowski (94’2”) in the runner-up spot.
The weather hit during the 800, when Ross tried to chase down WG’s Laura Leff, but could not pull it off, settling for second place in 2:27.27 as Leff (2:22.40) prevailed. Hannah Wood was fourth in the 100 hurdles in 17.63 seconds, while Annie Peterson took sixth in the 3,000 in 11:30.92.
