The Manlius Fire Department has sent members to participate in the Honor Guard for the annual National Fallen
Firefighters Memorial weekend in Emmitsburg, MD since 2002, when they suffered the loss of two firefighters in a house fire in Pompey. Due to COVID-19, this year’s in-person memorial has been cancelled.
“It is extremely important we remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in protecting their communities” said Manlius Chief Jansen Casscles.
“Manlius and Fayetteville work closely together in our day-to-day responses and we share the dedication to our fallen sisters and brothers at times like these remembrances” said Fayetteville Fire Chief Paul Hildreth.
In place of attending this year’s memorial, the Manlius and Fayetteville Fire Departments will participate in the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation “Bells Across America for Fallen Firefighters” campaign. Members will gather at perspective stations on Sunday, Oct. 4 to remember those who have died in the line of duty. As a part of the remembrance, bells will ring out at churches across the community and at the two fire stations at 10 a.m., in conjunction with the bells being sounded at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg. Members will adhere to all CDC COVID guidelines during this ceremony.
In addition, the firehouses in Manlius and Fayetteville will be lit red in memory of the 82 firefighters from across the nation who died in the line of dury in 2019 and 21 who died in previous years.
