BALDWINSVILLE — back at our youth, many of us spent countless hours reading comic books or “the funnies” in the newspaper. Then we matured and thought such things were juvenile. Well, we were wrong. Some of the best literature out there today (and for several years now) has been published as a graphic novel.
Baldwinsville Public Library purchases graphic novels for children and young adults, and these collections are quite large. Now we’re doing the same for adults.
What can you expect to find in this new collection? All the same things you will find in other sections of the library. There is fiction, non-fiction, biographies and memoirs, and classic literature. The difference is the artwork that goes into presenting the information or telling the story. And sometimes without the artwork, there would be no story.
Recent titles purchased have included Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.” Memoirs include New York Times best-selling author Adrian Tomine’s recently published “The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist,” and fictional titles include “How Do We Relationship?” by Tamifull and science-fiction title “Remina” by Junji Ito. For those who may want to ease into the world of graphic novels, there’s “On A Roll! A JumpStart Treasury” by Robb Armstrong. (If that sounds familiar, it’s because “JumpStart” is a major syndicated comic strip and Armstrong is a Syracuse University alum).
It’s always fun to stretch our limits and try something new, so why not start at the library with a graphic novel? And if you already do read them, please email your favorite authors and titles to [email protected]. We’d love to hear what you enjoy reading.
