Earning its most impressive win of the season, the West Genesee boys tennis team went to Baldwinsville Monday afternoon and had a nice balance between singles and doubles play to fight past the Bees 4-3.
B’ville entered the match with a 7-0 mark, and would get a quick singles point when Nick Walker beat the Wildcats’ Ian Swete 6-2, 6-1.
However, brothers Brent and Garrett Bolseslav both made up for it with impressive wins, as Brent shut out Matt Rothenhoefer 6-0, 6-0 and Garrett topped Chris Johns 6-2, 7-6.
In doubles, the crucial match featured Shane Heyn and Tanner McGuire, who had to go to a third set to earn a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Blaine Drake and Alec Funicello.
Sam Farchione and Billy Viau had an easier time of it, beating Scott Ferrari and Tyler Shaban 6-2, 6-2. Elsewhere, Tyler Arnold and Erik Breault lost to Dan Kot and Grady Schmidt 6-2, 6-2, with Alex Fox and Connor Smith beaten by John Jeffery and Matt Lawrence 6-3, 7-5.
Marcellus, who finished under .500 each of the last three years, clinched a winning record for 2012 by going 6-1 down the stretch, capped last Monday by a pair of impressive wins over Westhill by scores of 4-1 and 5-0.
They played single-set matches to 10 games. James Garzia and Sean Dunn both went 2-0, Dunn having to work past Dan Haynes 10-7 as Garzia beat Haynes and Sean DeKay by equal 10-3 margins. Dan Martin and Shane Barner also earned singles points.
Moving to doubles, Barner and Andrew Herold produced a 10-4 win over Fletcher Chapin and Ryan O’Connell, while Kyle McVey teamed with Martin and Mike Raymond for separate points. McVey and Raymond edged past Dan Chang and Brian McMullen 10-9.
