Baldwinsville Public Library’s weekly gathering for writers, Wordsmiths Writing Group, provides an informative, entertaining place to discuss all aspects of the craft of writing. Since January, our writing group has evolved and diversified. We continue to discuss basic aspects of writing but now we also talk about story holes in popular movies, rewriting the ending of a bestselling novel, and more.
Our agenda has at least one discussion topic, an activity, and updates on our current writing and group projects. We often connect our discussion to the writing activity. When we talked about avoiding confusion during dialogue between more than two characters, the writing activity entailed individually writing a short scene about our own characters having dinner. That led to talk about how to create more distinct character voices.
We are also working on building a short story collection that will be turned into an audio blog. Every few weeks we have a theme ranging from visions to masks to “And it started with a hand grenade … ” Each person can write a 1,500- to 3,000-word story (or poem with no word limit) and either record their own voice or have someone else read it. Soon, the podcast will be online to showcase our work.
Wordsmiths Writing Group appreciates diverse points of view, diverse genres and appreciates each person’s own voice. Join our group and see for yourself. The group meets at 7 p.m. Tuesdays over Zoom. Call the library and ask for Jacquie at 315-635-5631 or email [email protected] for the Zoom link.
