Perhaps one of the most anticipated rites of passage of summer in Central New York is attending the Great New York State Fair.
The 12 day celebration may mark the end of summer in many ways, but it is much more than that.
The fair highlights some of the best and most diverse aspects of the state all in one place.
The fair puts the spotlight on the importance of our agricultural resources.
From livestock to a cup of milk, chickens, sheep, pigs, horses and pretty much every other farm animal imaginable, the fair gives visitors the chance to see up close and personal just how important agriculture is to our state and just how wide ranging the farming business is.
Whether it is children petting an animal they might not otherwise see or adults learning from the exhibitors, the fair is a great source to learn about farming in New York State.
Of course one of the biggest draws is the food.
The fair gives visitors the chance to dine on classis like sausage and peppers as well as indulge in some of the more exotic treats offers.
Whether it is a staple like a burger and fries or an onion blossom, sampling international cuisine or taking a chance on the massive featured Thanksgiving sandwich, there is plenty to please most any taste buds.
Vendors will also be on hand with some the many wines and beers produced in New York State.
And of course there is the music. This year Chevy Court’s extensive lineup of free acts, including everything from classics like Brian Wilson who will perform the Beach Boy’s “Pet Sounds” album in its entirety for the album’s 50th anniversary to Chicago, Kesha, Robert Cray and Macy Gray, there are 12 days of performances planned.
There are also the amusement rides and games on the midway, exhibits, entertainment, art and plenty of other cultural attractions like the Pan-African Village and the Iroquois Indian Village.
No matter what your fair plans may entail, please remember to enjoy the fair, but enjoy it safely.
If possible take advantage of the regional transportation opportunities offered by Centro Bus, like the shuttle from ShoppingTown Mall to the fair. Traffic and parking are often congested during the fair and the bus is a great alternative.
If driving please be patient and do not under any circumstances drink and drive.
