The Northern Onondaga Public Library is in the back-to-school frame of mind. In just a few short weeks, college students will be packing up to head back to school and yellow buses full of children will hum through our community to begin a new year of classes. With that in mind, here are some helpful resources to prepare everyone for the start of a new school year:
Women’s Self-Defense Class: Campus Safety Edition
9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, NOPL @ Cicero
Learning how to take control of your own personal safety is an important issue for young women going off to college in the fall. June Worden, instructor and owner of Syracuse Self Defense, is a former state trooper and marine who will cover personal safety topics and talk about how to keep you and your friends safe. She will also demonstrate physical defense techniques. Registration is required; sign up at nopl.org or by calling 699-2032.
School supply collection at NOPL
Each NOPL location will be collecting school supplies for families in need throughout the month of August. You can drop off things like pens, pencils, crayons, safety scissors, composition and spiral notebooks, loose-leaf paper and more. We will be bringing donations to local food pantries for distribution.
Learning Express Library
Available on nopl.org, Learning Express Library can help students in elementary, middle, and high school prepare for important tests and boost their skills in important subjects. There is even help for students preparing for college, including ACT and SAT test prep guides and practice exams.
Local yearbook collection
If the start of a new school year makes you feel a little nostalgic, bring your old school memories to life by perusing digital copies of old yearbooks from the North Syracuse school district. Head to nopl.org/yearbooks, where we’ve linked you to yearbooks from the middle schools, junior high and high school dating back as far as 1952.
Call or stop by your nearest NOPL location in Brewerton, Cicero or North Syracuse to discover the many great resources our libraries have that will help you make this school year a success!
