On Nov. 9, 2016, Mary Lent Ayer passed on, to continue her journey of an extraordinarily full and happy life. Mary was born Jan. 4, 1925, in Passaic, N J, to Rudolph and Dorothy Swan Lent. She received a bachelor’s degree from Smith College, and a master’s degree in family counseling from Syracuse University. Mary and John were married in 1949. Their lives together embraced qualities that always surpassed the sum of its parts.
Nicknamed “Sis,” Mary was a sister and friend to all. Her life was a passionate celebration. Always the extrovert, she loved to generate laughter. Her tonic was people, whether in theater, art, politics, music or humanitarian endeavors. It is no wonder that Mary, whose favorite color was unquestionably yellow, added sparkle to so many lives.
Mary was predeceased by her brother Klink Lent in 1970, and by her husband Dr. John Ayer in 2010. Mary is survived by daughters Nancy Ayer (Pat), Betsy (Bob) Eibert, Bonnie (Gene) Beckeman, and son Dan (Stephanie) Ayer. Ten grandchildren enriched her life: Marjorie, Julie, Andrea, Ami, Erik, Kris, Kim, Molly, JD, and Duncan, followed by nine great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, at First Presbyterian Church in Skaneateles. Reception following in Dobson Hall.
Contributions may be given in her memory to the Sudan Medical Clinic: John Dau Foundation, 136 Everett Rd, Albany, NY 12205. To leave a message of condolence, please visit whitechapelfh.com.
