Fayetteville-Manlius High School and Manlius Pebble Hill have both received accolades for their musicals and, last week, they both received multiple Syracuse High School Theatre Award nominations, with F-M gaining nine nods and MPH gaining three.
The third annual SHSTA show will be presented Sunday, June 4, at the Landmark Theatre. Featuring a red carpet gala, 14 award presentations, and several live student performances, the Tony Awards-inspired show will honor hundreds of students from more than 26 Central New York high schools. A team of volunteer judges from the local theater scene attends several plays each and submits an evaluation to calibrate the ratings.
F-M High School is in the running for awards for their rendition of “The Phantom of the Opera,” a total of nine nominations: Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical; Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Lead Role – sophomore Mika Sajnog and senior Elizabeth McCrohan for their performances as “Christine”; Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Lead Role – senior Lucien Hale for his performance as “The Phantom”; Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role – junior Lindsey Puc for her performance as “Carlotta”; Outstanding Performance by a Student Orchestra; Outstanding Stage Crew; Outstanding Music Director – Shawn Hebert; and Rising Star – Sophomore Marco Giacona for his role as “Raoul.”
“Our whole team could not have been prouder of the process and the product that our students were able to achieve,” said Shawn Herbert, director for “The Phantom of the Opera” at F-M. “They were extremely invested in terms of their preparation and their emotional attachment to the characters. Best of all, they were phenomenally supportive of each other throughout the entire process.”
Manlius Pebble Hill qualified for the following awards for their rendition of “Sweet Charity,” a total of three nominations: Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical; Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Lead Role – Lydia Kelly as Charity; and Outstanding Choreographer – Michele Koziara.
Tickets will first go on sale for students, and then will be opened to the general public. The event begins at 5 p.m.; doors open at 4:30 p.m. Advance sale tickets are $10 and can be purchased through the Landmark Theatre’s website, or on the day of the event at the door for $12.
