Fewer snow days mean longer Memorial Day weekend for local schools

For students and teachers in Central New York, the benefits of this year’s mild winter just keep coming.
Because area districts didn’t use all of the snow days provided under New York State Education Law regulations, both Liverpool and North Syracuse are designating the Friday prior to Memorial Day as an additional holiday.
According to state regulations, if two or more emergency closing days remain unused by April 15, districts can add those days to the Memorial Day holiday or revise their end-of-year calendars. Both Liverpool and North Syracuse have opted to give students and staff May 27 off.
Meanwhile, Baldwinsville has changed its last week of school to incorporate the time off. Instead of having a full day of school on June 23, the schedule will be as follows for Ray, Elden, McNamara, Palmer, Reynolds and Van Buren schools:
- Monday, June 20: Full day
- Tuesday, June 21: Full day
- Wednesday, June 22: Half day; last day for K-7. Ray Middle School will dismiss at 11:15 a.m. and the elementary schools will dismiss at 12:15 p.m.
- Thursday, June 23: Staff only
- Friday, June 24: Staff only
Baker High School and Durgee Junior High School will follow the schedule for Regents week.
Additional changes are not anticipated, but if they need to be made, they will be communicated to students and staff as needed.
