Gertrude “Trudy” Moore, 94, died at her home on July 4, 2020 in Cazenovia. She was born in Nurnberg, Germany on May 7, 1926, to the late Anton and Greta Bayer. Trudy was pre-deceased by her only sister Hella Teutsch. Trudy is survived by her loving husband of 69 wonderful years, Walter.
Trudy enjoyed her early years in Germany until 1940 when her family was forced to flee the country due to the Holocaust. At age 14, she crossed the Atlantic by ship and landed in Mexico and eventually found home in Glens Falls, N.Y. Her passion for sports and teaching led her to Cortland where she met her husband and best friend, Walt. She graduated from SUNY Cortland in 1949 and taught physical education in Pulaski. She married Walt in 1950 and they lived in Hamilton, Burnt Hills and then Cazenovia. In Cazenovia she ran a bed and breakfast, worked for Hospice and volunteered at the church.
Together they raised six children. They spent many hours at games, concerts, art shows and school events, always making each of the kids feel special.
Trudy taught at many places over the years, including Cazenovia, Hamilton, Burnt Hills, Scotia and DeRuyter, all with an exuberance that made each person feel special. Playing or watching tennis was a constant throughout her life. She hit thousands of tennis balls to her kids and when on the court was as happy as anywhere. She won the Glens Falls Tennis Tournament two times and won the Saratoga County Women’s Championship. Baking pies, eating raspberries, spending time with her children were all cherished events. Her willingness to talk and listen to anyone was unsurpassed and beloved by all.
Trudy’s last 10 years were made enjoyable with the tireless and unending love and care from her husband. He focused every moment on her wellbeing and comfort, with great help from their children and a group of superb caregivers. Walt and Trudy are long time members of St. James Parish.
Trudy is survived by her children, Dennis (Jeme) Moore, Lynn (David Freni) Moore, Barclay Moore, Neale (Carri) Moore, Martha (Ed Thomas) Moore, Steve (Toni-Ann) Moore; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
