Edward R. Sutfin, 86

Edward R. Sutfin, 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at his son Tom’s home in Long Beach, CA.  Ed was born on March 3, 1933, in Manlius Center, to Dorothy “Wunder” Sutfin.  He lived with two brothers Richard “Dick” and James “Jimmy”.  He was later adopted and raised by Donald Sutfin.
Ed was a lifelong member of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 545 in Syracuse.  He was a crane operator for much of his career and had his thumbprint on many of the buildings in Syracuse.  In addition, he worked on projects at Nine Mile Island and put in miles of gas lines throughout the north country. His proudest accomplishment was working at Fort Drum, home of the Army’s 10th Mountain Division.
He was also an avid skier most of his life at Labrador Mountain until he hung up his skis in his late 70s.  He joined the National Ski Patrol (NSP) in 1963 and received his National Appointment in March of 1978.  He patrolled over 20 years with the creed of “service and safety”.  He worked to recruit and train new volunteers into the NSP.  He also loved slalom racing and won many medals racing.
Ed also liked to race go carts, scuba dive, play softball, coach Little League Baseball, fly planes, hunt, fish, mountain climb, ice climb and generally loved an adventure.   He picked up golf in the 1980s and loved the sport, spending time at many public courses in Central New York.  At his core, Ed was a farmer who loved gardening and was known for his horseradish and garlic and his Super-Bowl Bloody Marys.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his former wife, Mamie Sutfin, and his two sons and their families, Thomas of Long Beach, California and Michael of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He took pride in his four grandchildren.  Surviving are his brothers Richard and James.
Burial will be at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Dewitt, New York at 11:00 AM on Friday July 19th.
His celebration of life visitation will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, July 19, at R.H. Schepp and Son Minoa Chapel – 6530 Schepp’s Corners Road Minoa, NY 13116.  A service will start at 6:30 p.m.
On Saturday, July 20, there will be a reception from 4–8 p.m. at Rouges’ Roost Golf Club – 1092 State Route 31, Bridgeport, NY 13030.  Hors d’oeuvres will be served from 5–7 p.m.  Family, friends and others whose lives Ed touched are invited to the Celebration of Life on Friday as well as the reception on Saturday.
