Carlo A. DiSalvo passed away peacefully in his home, with family, on April 19, 2019, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Carlo was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1929 to the late Andrew and Mary DiSalvo.
He graduated from the Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades in 1947. He also completed a course in General Textiles after which he worked in a clothing store.
Carlo was a naval reservist and became active duty during the Korean War, serving as a machinery repairman on the USS Vulcan. He met his future bride, Anna Abbatomarco, at a dance for servicemen sponsored by the local girls in Providence, RI. They were married in 1955. He attended Bryant University and graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. This education was the foundation of his future work in business. Carlo and Anna lived in Connecticut and Road Island.
Upon moving to Central New York, they lived at Onondaga Hill before moving to Skaneateles in 1976 where they have resided ever since. Here, Carlo worked as a risk manager for Crouse-Hinds, Canadian-Pacific and Agway. He was active in several professional associations and was a mentor to his younger colleagues.
Carlo’s dedication to the Skaneateles community is evidenced in over 30 years of volunteer work with SAVES where he served as president in 2001 and 2002. He also drove for FISH, which he continued to do into his 80s. In addition, Carlo sat on the village board for 10 years and was a long-time parishioner at St. Mary’s. He liked reading and was a frequent library patron.
Carlo was an industrious man and enjoyed building two of the family homes, as well as working on DIY projects and car maintenance, aptitudes he passed on to his children. He liked to joke “We don’t do much, but what we do is pretty good.” Carlo was always willing to attempt any task, accept any challenge or try to solve any problem.
He will be remembered for his patience, his sense of humor, his enduring fairness, his words of wisdom and his dedication to family, work and community.
He is predeceased by his sister Christine DelConte, his brother Jerome DiSalvo and his wife Antoinette, his brother Leonard DiSalvo, his brother-in-law and best friend Umberto Benfante, nephew Vincent Benfante and niece Mary Saulle.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Anna C. DiSalvo, his children Andrew DiSalvo and his wife Anita, Carol DiSalvo and her husband Jim, Catherine DiSalvo, Paul DiSalvo, his grandchildren Lindsay, Cayla, Raven, Phoebe, Lucas and Julianna. He is also survived by his sisters Frances Benfante and Mary Gray, many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Carlo will be missed and loved always.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 3, at St. Mary’s of the Lake Church, Skaneateles followed by a luncheon reception in the Parish Center. All are welcome.
