TOWN OF LYSANDER – As part of the annual RecruitNY statewide initiative, all six volunteer fire departments in the town of Lysander – Belgium Cold Springs, Cody, North West, Plainville, Phoenix and Seneca River fire departments – and the Greater Baldwinsville Ambulance Corp (GBAC) will come together for a Recruitment Day Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at Lysander Town Hall, 8220 Loop Road, Baldwinsville.
During this family-friendly event, community members can tour fire trucks, an ambulance and a fire safety trailer; meet Sparky the Fire Dog; and learn more about how they can serve their volunteer fire department and ambulance corp.
Volunteer fire departments across New York state have been faced with decreased membership and increased call volume. Like most volunteer fire departments, the Belgium Cold Springs, Cody, Plainville, Phoenix and Seneca River fire departments and North West Fire District need to bolster their ranks so they can continue to provide the optimum level of protection for their residents.
Lysander Town Hall is hosting this town-wide recruitment event to help the volunteer fire departments and ambulance corp. within the town raise public awareness regarding the need for volunteers and to highlight the rewards of being a member of a volunteer fire department.
Throughout the day, there will be firefighting and EMS activities and demonstrations. Visitors can learn how to properly use a fire extinguisher and learn more about CPR. They also can tour the fire safety trailer, fire trucks and other apparatus, and find out more about becoming a member.
These activities give visitors a taste of what it means to be in the fire service. Volunteer firefighters and volunteer emergency medical technicians (EMTs) will be on hand to discuss the requirements and rewards of joining. All are welcome and encouraged to attend, including families with children.
There also will be food trucks on site, including The Birdsong Café Food Truck and Ali Baba Food Truck.
Organizers thanked the Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) and Design Shop Sign & Graphics Inc. for their contribution and donation of signs to help promote this event and the town of Lysander, especially Town Supervisor Robert Wicks and Town Clerk Dina Falcone, for supporting volunteer firefighters and EMS providers in the town and hosting this town-wide recruitment event.
