Students encouraged to apply before Dec. 23 deadline
The Department of Civil Service recently announced that new internship opportunities are available throughout New York state government across a wide array of state agencies – both upstate and downstate – and encouraged students to apply for 2017 spring semester internships prior to the Dec. 23, 2016, application deadline. An estimated 400 student internships are expected to be available for the spring 2017 semester.
The Student Intern Program is one component of Governor Cuomo’s New New York Leaders Initiative, which is focused on drawing new and highly-skilled individuals to the State workforce through both a fellowship and internship program. Through this program, undergraduate and graduate students are exposed to the work of governing, while gaining valuable hands-on program experience and interaction with government leaders and policy-makers.
“Governor Cuomo is committed to attracting and developing the next generation of leaders interested in serving our great Empire State,” said Lola W. Brabham, acting commissioner of the New York State Department of Civil Service. “I encourage students to apply and to learn first-hand the value of a career in public service.”
New York State has a one-stop website – nysinternships.cs.ny.gov – that allows students to view job descriptions, create profiles, specify occupational interests, and upload resumes, writing samples, and letters of recommendation. Students can apply for multiple internships at the same time.
Approximately 1,600 students have participated in the Student Intern Program since its launch in February 2012. A current list of available internships for the spring 2017 semester is located at nysinternships.cs.ny.gov/nnyl/main/viewinternships.cfm.
The Student Intern Program is open to graduate and undergraduate students at colleges and universities throughout New York state, as well as New York state residents enrolled elsewhere. Opportunities include paid and unpaid positions and internships may provide academic credit depending on the policy of the intern’s educational institution.
Three internship sessions are offered each year: spring, summer, and fall.
