A recent example was a 69-year-old man who was on a Medicare Advantage Plan that worked well for him until he was diagnosed with bile duct cancer requiring extensive surgery and post-hospital chemotherapy. He now needed the coverage a Medicare Supplement Plan provides. Unless he was eligible for a Special Election Period (SEP), coverage for a Supplement Plan would not begin until January 1. He needed surgery right away and so was advised to apply for EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage) which would provide his SEP eligibility and allow him to change his plan immediately. He was approved for EPIC, and he switched to a Medicare Supplement plan that covered his deductibles, coinsurance, and co-pays. Although he will pay a higher monthly premium, by making the switch to the Supplement Plan, he saved thousands of dollars the Advantage Plan would not have covered.
