Spring has come and summer is looming, and the season for ice cream has arrived. At Caz Pizza, owners Suzie and Tom Hayes recently have redesigned their ice cream alcove to make better organized, more visible and full of new flavors and specialized offerings.
“Everything we do is fresh and natural … we are so concerned with have the finest and freshest ingredients that we thought, why don’t we do that with our ice cream?” said Suzie when explaining the reason for the revamping of their ice cream.
Caz Pizza has been serving Purity Ice Cream, all natural ice cream made in Ithaca, for the past 15 years – and they are the only location in the Cazenovia area that serves that brand. The Hayes’ started out having soft serve and eight different flavors from Purity out of the small alcove at the front of their business on Albany Street.
Last month, the Hayeses decided to change their offerings to eliminate soft serve and add six new hard ice cream flavors. According to Suzie, they decided to serve only hard ice cream because research showed them that soft serve contains unnatural ingredients and preservatives such as dextrose, phosphates and gum.
“We care about the ingredients our customers consume. We are about all natural, good for you ice cream and food,” she said. “We have been serving Cazenovia for over 30 years and we love it.”
In addition to their current flavors of vanilla, chocolate, mint chip, chocolate chip cookie dough and Bulldog crunch, Caz Pizza has added new flavors such as chocolate peanut butter, mocha chip, butter pecan and boom berry. They also offer milkshakes, malts, signature sundaes and banana splits.
They also offer a “pup cup” for customers’ dogs that includes one scoop of any ice cream of a customer’s choice topped with two dog biscuits on top.
In addition to the new flavors, the Hayeses also redesigned the ice cream counter with a new floor, new counter and new ice cream freezer, all of which has made the space better organized and more efficient, Suzie said. Two employees can now work back there serving ice cream instead of just one. They have also added new signs and billboards in the restaurant to make the ice cream counter more visible and interesting.
“We’ve had a great reception so far,” Suzie added. “People dining in have really been looking at the ice cream counter and been very interested.”
“It’s really turned out well,” Tom said. “You can’t leave without walking past the ice cream freezer. It’s good and good for you – there’s the headline.”
Caz Pizza – which also boasts the largest selection of craft beers in Madison County as well as wine on tap from Napa Valley, Calif. – serves ice cream until 9:30 p.m. every Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
