ONONDAGA COUNTY – Once again, it proved close when the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool girls tennis teams faced one another last Monday afternoon.
And just like their first encounter in late August, it was the Northstars triumphant, claiming a 4-3 decision over the Warriors entirely based on what happened in doubles.
C-NS got it going when Meghan Meives and Lily Misco won 6-2, 6-3 over Christy Bui and Angela Morgans, with Jaila Killingbeck and Kat McRobbie-Taru nearly matching those scores, beating Jaspreet Puerwal and Chloe Musengo 6-3, 6-2.
Addyson Fedele and Maddie Frisch were close to a shutout as they routed Alyssa Henderson and Hailey Jaquin 6-0, 6-1. And though the second set was close, Ainsley Hill and Haneefa Wahab earned the clinching point when they beat Lauren Graham and Kamry Scanna 6-0, 7-5.
Liverpool did get every singles point, Angelica Underwood rolling past Meghan Obleman 6-0, 6-1 as, by those same scores, Allie Kerneklian beat Calista Nguyen. In two sets, Olivia Magnarelli beat Madelyn Shaw 6-3, 6-2.
Right after this, Liverpool faced Baldwinsville and lost, 7-0, to the Bees, who handled every match in two sets except first singles, where Underwood, who led early, could not hold on, falling to Mira Nadzan 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Then C-NS shut out Henninger 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon, with Nguyen, Shaw and Obleman dropping just two games in six sets of singles play and four total games lost by the doubles teams of Mieves-Misco, McRobbie-Taru-Mackenzie Prentice, Killingbeck-Lauren Malec and Wahab-Ngoc Pham.
A third match in four days did not faze the Northstars, either, as it took on Central Square Thursday and put away the Redhawks 5-2.
To preserve a doubles sweep, Mieves and Misco had to come from behind, pulling out a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Molly Giblin and Claire Hayes.
Fedele and Frisch won 6-4, 6-4 over Jeena Ibrahim and Caitlin Garvin, with Killingbeck and Malec beating Kiera Meneilly and Emma Turo 6-3, 6-4. McRobbie-Taru and Prentice topped Michelle Brissette and Chloe Giblin 6-3, 6-2.
Up in singles, Obleman lost 6-4, 6-2 to Kate Hayes and Shaw saw an early lead get away to Paige Westfalf 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, but Nguyen earned a point when she got past Olivia Ruzekowicz 6-4, 6-2.
C-NS’s busy week would conclude Saturday with a 5-2 defeat to West Genesee, the Northstars swept in singles including Shaw surrendering an early lead in a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 defeat to Ava Amodio.
Prentice and McRobbie-Taru rallied past Hannah Sparks and Kailyn Drury 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, with Malec and Iqbar staging their own comeback to beat Cynthia Schlenker and Evelina Mauro 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 for the Northstars’ lone points.
