Summer is over, but Maxwell Memorial Library in Camillus is as busy as ever, with many programs and events set for September.
Maxwell is selling Salt City Coffee again for our very popular Coffee Fundraiser. Choose from Syracuse Blend, Salt City’s signature medium roast; Dark Arts, their in-house espresso blend; or Decaf. All varieties are available in 12-ounce bags. Dark Arts is available whole bean only. Syracuse Blend and Decaf are available whole bean or ground.
Orders can be placed through Sept. 30 at the library or through the library’s website.
The library accepts cash, checks payable to: “Maxwell Memorial Library,” or payment via PayPal. We anticipate coffee will be ready for you to pick-up at the library the week of October 9, but we’ll notify you when it’s ready. Unfortunately, we are unable to ship orders.
This is the perfect time to learn a new hobby or improve your skills with an existing one. Come play cribbage the first two Wednesdays of the month from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. We have boards, extra playing cards, and a small group of friendly regulars who will help you learn the game. Seasoned players are more than welcome.
Experienced Mah Jongg players can plan ahead to Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 5:30 p.m. for Advanced Mah Jongg Tips and Strategies with Wendy Christopher.
This two-hour class will teach you tips on how to choose a hand, Charleston like a pro, and win more games. The class is free, but registration is required.
The Greater Camillus Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Business Expo at the Camillus Municipal Building on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 1 to 5 p.m. held in conjunction with the Camillus Police Department’s Community Social Event.
This is a family-friendly event and is free and open to the public. Maxwell Library will be there! Visit our table and make pin buttons, friendship bracelets, and spin our prize wheel to guess children’s books characters.
On Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m., the library will host author Glenn Ivers for a book talk on his Angels of Bastogne: A Remembrance of World War II. Based on the true story of U.S. Army doctor Captain John T. “Jack” Prior and Belgian nurses Renée Lemaire and Augusta Chiwy, Glenn Ivers’ novel presents a fictionalized account of the harrowing events of December 1944: the Battle of the Bulge, and the bombing of Prior’s medical aid station.
Glenn H. Ivers is a lifelong Syracuse resident and a graduate of Colgate University. He served in the United States Peace Corps and enjoyed a career in the fields of youth development, adult literacy, and community health in Central New York. His three Telly Award-winning documentary films were distributed by the Public Broadcasting Service: Hope is a Literate Woman with Hillary Clinton; Literacy Changes Lives with Barbara Bush; and Song of the Refugee with Samite Mulondo. Jack Prior was a friend and mentor of Glenn Ivers. The book is based on Prior’s personal World War II memoir. Audience participation is encouraged in the singing of songs from 1944 and the sharing of memories. Registration for the talk is preferred. Copies of Angels of Bastogne will be available for purchase and signing by the author. Cost is $20, cash or check.
Join the library in person at Maxwell Library and occasionally at special off-site locations to learn simple ways to bring meditation and mindfulness into your daily life. These monthly workshops for adults ages 18 and up are led by Renee Goot, a local yoga therapist and meditation teacher and owner of Syracuse Therapeutic Yoga LLC. On Wednesday, Sept. 27, the class will meet at Camillus Park (the park with the splash pad) at 6 p.m. for a special walking meditation. Please register online and find more details about this month’s session.
Maxwell’s standing monthly programs are back in place, and we’d love to see more new faces at them.
Our three adult book clubs have something for all reading preferences. Between the Lines discusses The Lincoln Highway, by Amor Towles, on Monday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.

Check out Alyson Esposito’s ever-popular adult greeting card classes, usually held on the third Thursday of the month, at 4 and 5 p.m., and Library Director Jenny Burke’s Make It at Maxwell adult craft program, usually held on the fourth Saturday of the month at 11 a.m. Both craft programs fill up quickly, so be sure to register early.
Of course, the library offers many activities for children and teens, from weekly story times and crafts to our new Graphic Novel Club (Wednesdays at 4 p.m.) and Homeschool Fun (second Mondays at 1 p.m.).
