VILLAGE OF FAYETTEVILLE – Fayetteville Fire & EMS held an open house on April 23, allowing its members to connect with the community they serve in a light and informative manner.
Held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the walk-in event was the first hosted by the department in two years. It featured vehicle extrication demonstrations, fire safety tutorials and guided tours of the station at 425 E. Genesee St., including glimpses inside its fire trucks, engines and ambulances.
Hot dogs, bagged snacks and refreshments were also offered throughout the Saturday open house, and young attendees were given the chance at different points to flaunt their firefighting abilities.
One activity taught children to extinguish a fire at the base as they struck the sensors at the bottom of a BullEx Intelligent Training System with an expelled propellant. Another let them use a hose to spray down a window prop from about 10 feet away.
A handout distributed contained a QR code for the MyLS app, a local safety app that enables community members to impart useful information to first responders prior to a fire call or separate emergency including the number of people and pets in a household, if there’s a hearing impaired individual and whether or not the property has an explosive propane tank.
Open house coordinator Lt. Kip Williams said the event also served as a recruitment opportunity for the mostly volunteer department, which he said is in need of more members. To learn more visit fayettevillefd.org.
