LIVERPOOL — After months of roadwork and the installation of new traffic signals, the New York State Department of Transportation plans to open the revamped intersection at Tulip and Oswego streets in the village of Liverpool sometime this week.
The new design allows for two left-turn lanes from Tulip, heading south on Oswego.
Curtis Jetter, the public information officer for the DOT’s Central New York office, confirmed the plans last Thursday.
Contractors widened Tulip Street in front of the historic Liverpool First Presbyterian Church. The second left-turn lane from Tulip onto Oswego Street will accommodate increased truck traffic expected to be generated by the massive Amazon warehouse being built on Morgan Road in the town of Clay.
In a letter sent last June to Liverpool Mayor Gary White, DOT Regional Director David Smith wrote “two exclusive left turn lanes from Tulip St. to Oswego St. would be needed to accommodate the increase in traffic volume. Dual 350′ left turn lanes require widening of Tulip St. to approximately 550′ north of the intersection.”
The Tulip and Oswego Street intersection is one of the busiest in the village.
