ELBRIDGE– Jordan-Elbridge Middle School has wrapped up its “Love of Literature” reading event facilitated by seventh grade teachers. Throughout the month of February, students were able to earn raffle tickets by reading novels during the school day. Then, students could put those raffle tickets toward reader-themed prizes.
“What I enjoy most about reading is just getting lost in another world,” said student Solomia Makarchuk.
The first-place prize was an Amazon Kindle with all the accessories. English teacher Jaime Glantz said this challenge really showed off the positive impact of community support. Money for the grand-prize Kindle was raised in less than one day via a Donors Choose project page. That helped to fuel a positive reading culture for students.
On her project page, Glantz said, “We read for knowledge. We read for understanding. We read for compassion, inspiration, and hope. And when times are tough, we read for courage and to find meaning and purpose in our lives.”
The page got so many hits because organizations such as the Town of Elbridge, Elbridge Free Library and the Senior Center all promoted it on their social media pages.
“I love how I can relate to the characters,” said student Alyssa Compo. “I’ve spent more time reading.”
“It’s a good time killer, and I like it to compare it to the movie if it has one,” said student Landon Bryant.
Next up for readers is the “Harry Potter” series, “The Giver” series, Hatchet and more.
